Do protein shakes make you gain weight?!


Question: My husband has lost 30lbs recently by changing his diet and doing Krav Maga religiously. He recently started drinking the protein shakes every morning and honestly looks like he is gaining weight again. He has not changed his diet and is still working out... so my question is, will the shakes make you gain weight? And when and how much should he be taking?

It's not the amount of protein that makes someone gain weight, it's the amount of Calories consumed that will make him gain weight. So if he weren't taking the shakes before, then those protein shake Calories would explain his weight gain. He shouldn't over do it on the protein shakes, it's better to eat protein from natural sources (dairy, meat, nuts). Excess protein gets turned into Urine, not muscle. If he eats meat, he most likely already gets the required amount of protein, unless he's in body building competitions.

Protein shakes accelerate muscle build-up. So on their own, they shouldn't contribute to weight gain, but combined with exercise they'll lead to an increase in weight because of muscle being formed.

Protein is a muscle building nutrient. The more protein you eat, the more muscle you build, the more muscle you have the more fat you burn. Muscle weighs more than fat. You have to cut back on other high fat foods at the same time however in order to see positive results!

If you consume more calories than you are burning then you will gain weight. It does not matter whether the calorie source was carbohydate, protein or fat.

If the shake is ment to suppliment potein in his diet then he shouldn't gain weight but I is made to increase muscle mass then I can understand that because muscle weighs more than fat and those kinds of shakes will make you gain muscle mass faster.

protien and the correct workout will make you gain muscle weight. protein without the workout .......pile on the pounds, not muscle either

Yes they can even the low cal stuff, amazing thing is that your liver takes the over abundance of protein ad turns it into stored energy. Some shakes can give a large amount of cal intake as well. Check the label and try to get in only 20 or so grams of protein at a time rather then the 60 plus some take in.

yes it does but only if you have a shake with every meal but if you have a shake by itself in place of the meal, it isn't

Protein will help you lose weight and gain muscle mass! I use whey protein myself as a substitue. First to lose weight and gain muscle mass now to maintain and get the protein the body needs when I don't have time to eat right!

Depends on what kind he is taking, whats in them, serving size etc...some are 120 calories per scoop with the serving being 2 scoops (240) but there are others that go up to 270-500 calories per serving.

If he did not reduce his food/calorie intake to accomadate the shakes he could very well be gaining weight. He needs to review his meal guideline and see what the calories/nutrition guidelines are on the protein...he also needs to look at how many carbs are in the protein shakes. Some are expressly made to be used post workout and are much higher in carbs!

Well it depends on what kind of protein he takes and how much he takes. I am a Wrestler so i have to watch my weight. there is a supplement called no explode. my wrestling couch sells and provides me with this... mainly your body needs protein and vitiams... when you take the no explode your basically eating a chicken.... 3 times a day morning lunch and dinner 1 scoop... yeah you can eat but not so much maybe a tiny spoon fill of peanut butter and some yogurt..... i have a highly effective diet plan that is good for your body... just in three days you might lose 10lb... want to know more about this diet write back

He probably lost his weight by lowering his total caloric intake when he first changed his diet and doing Krav Maga. When he started drinking the protein shakes, he is adding more calories to his total daily intake. It doesn't matter if he is eating 3 extra burgers, a bowl of ice cream, or drinking protein shakes, he will gain weight if he consumes extra calories. Tell him if he wants to still drink the protein shakes because he likes them, tell him to REPLACE the protein shake with one of his meals, say, like breakfast.
