As a person informed about nutrition, I advise you not to have gastric bypass surgery. What the bypass does is drastically reduce the functional size of your stomach. As a result, food spends much less time in the stomach and is pushed into the intestine prematurely. The food entering the intestine is not properly processed by gastric juices and enzymes, and so you will have problems with the absorption of certain nutrients. The GP can have complications, such as infection, and it cannot be reversed.

I strongly advise you to change your lifestyle instead. Switch to a balanced, nutritious diet which includes whole grains, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and lean meat, and which excludes all processed foods and beverages that contain added sugar. That plus daily exercise should enable you to lose weight without pain, discomfort, or hazard to your health.

talk it over with your dr. let him decide it its something you need. its along process if you do go though with it. you have to get a pass from a theripist. then there is a very strict diet.

I would only do the gastric bypass as a last resort . Have you tried losing weight on your own? Get you a $3.00 pedometer and try to get in 10,000 steps a day and fill up on water , lean protein , veggies and fruits . I wish you the best of luck .

my mom had it last year. you will have your bad days for awhile but the effects(in my opinion)are really good. its been a year and my mom has lost 125 pounds and she is still losing. If your weight is enadangering your health then i suggest you consider it. But as far as boosting self-esteem or trying to please others or anything like that i am sure you're beautiful just the way you are!

Actually, you are probably a good candidate for it, you should talk it over with your doctor more extensively. But, you have to know that you have got to change your entire lifestyle afterward. If you don't, you'll lose a lot of weight, then regain it again.

I would say though that you aren't so heavy that you couldn't start an exercise and diet regime (you should also talk to your doctor). When I say diet, I don't mean deprivation - I mean a complete healthy lifestyle change. It can be done, and of course it will be hard at first, but after a while you will just get into the groove of it.

Actually, it really isn't for someone who is over 500 pounds. If you weigh around 500, they will actually have you lose weight before attempting the bypass. That high of a weight is too dangerous for surgery because of the large amount of medical problems that can result from the surgery. You sound like a candidate. But it's not a surgery to take lightly, people CAN and sometimes do die from it. Ask your doctor about it. They can guide you and advise you. Good luck.

I know several people that have had the surgery with fabulous outcomes. sure there are some risks..but there are risks with every surgery....and there are more health risks living overweight than there are with surgeries.
gastric bypass is for people 100 or more lbs over weight. the patients that are 500lbs are the ones that pose more of a risk during surgery.... the more you weigh the greater the risk because of the pressure on your chest.

you will probably be put on a liquid diet to show you are committed and to shrink your liver...which helps during the surgery itself. (weight loss before the surgery also increases your chances of having your insurance cover the costs.)

The decision to go through with the surgery is YOUR decision, but is such a wonderful thing to do for yourself. You give yourself a new start at life. Its not an easy thing (and definitely not the 'easy' way out)... but if you have reached the point where you want a better quality of life, then you should go for it.

Have you ever watched the show, The Biggest Loser?? I'm sure you've at least heard of it. Many of the constestants on there all weigh about the same as you and many of them a LOT more than you.
I think you need to get with your dr. to OK you for exercising and then either come up with a plan for exercising and counseling with a dietician on meal planning and then get to it. If you can afford to join a gym and get a trainer it would be good too or join Weight Watchers or some other group like that. They have a lot of support with other ladies in the program.
I seriously don't think it's worth the risk of getting an operation. It should be done when you are no longer able to physically get around and surely you don't want to even get to that point.
I recently watched a show about gastric bypass. There was a woman who was nearly 600 LB and she got it because it was either get it or die. She still nearly died. She had bad reactions to it and also had heart issues.
I wouldn't risk it as long as you are physically able to move.
So unless the dr. sees a reason for you not to exercise, then you should go with that instead of surgery.
Good luck! I will gladly be your online exercise buddy if you need it. I'm in the process of trying to lose weight as well. I'm currently 195. I really believe that you have to have a great support system to help keep you motivated.

Ok Joanie, let me tell you first off, that yes, the procedure is risky. About 4% of patients have a bad result. The mortality is about 2%. You diffinately qualify for the procedure by your BMI. It's not impossible, but very improbable that you can lost 150 pounds on your own. If you have the operation, and let me stress this, pick a surgeon that does NOTHING but these procedures, you will lose about 1 pound A DAY until you are thin. Now listen closely. Whatever your subconscious beliefs, you WILL NOT be able to defeat this procedure. If you eat fatty foods, you are going to vomit. If you eat too much, you are going to vomit. The reason you are going to lose the weight is that you CANNOT cheat. Your love affair with food is over. Do you really want to be thin? After you have examined your motives, don't forget, you are also going to have to have plastic surgery. When you lose 150 pounds, there's going to be a LOT of skin left over. If you do NOT lose the weight, then it's bad knees, diabetes and a very short life span in your future. I'm not talking fashion here, I'm talking quality of life. It's your decision.

if it improves your quality of life then you should do it.
