Working out and dieting????!

Question: I have trouble losing weight. I'd like to lose about 50 pounds, trouble is I lose 30 fairly easy with dieting and excerise but then I can't lose any more. I did the Body for Life program for almost 6 months. I lost 30 pounds during the first three months and then after that I didn't lose any but started to gain weight. I don't know what the deal is. Any ideas???

There are several factors that could be inhibiting the loss of the last 20lbs:
1) The thinner you get the less calories your body needs so as you drop weight you must lower your caloric intake to suit your new weight. You must find out your current BMR and times it by your current activity level to find the amount of calories you need to maintain your new weight. then you must deduct 15-20% of that caloric value to find a correct value to stimulate weight loss again. There are some calorie requirement calculators here for you to play around with: http://www.caloriesperhour.com/tutorial_...
2) make sure you are changing your exercise routine every 4-6 weeks! after this time period your body adapts to the exercise which means it is burning far less calories than it did when you started the exercise. you can alter your routine by adding intensity, adding weight load, adding time, adding reps/set or changing up the type of exercise/machine altogether.
hope this helps.

you have to switch it up. your body gets used to certain behavior and gets comfortable. switch your diet and exercise up and you will begin to lose weight again.

every body has that one weight that it stalls at...you lose weight until then and then it takes much more effort to lose more...

not everyone has the genes to be rail thin. if your body absolutely refuses to give up more weight, you may have reached that point where it is what it is meant to be. also, be careful because there are platues in this. it is like i hit 240 and i just stayed there no matter what i did. i think at that point i was building muscle and kind of replacing anything i lost for a time. it lasted a couple months before i started dropping again after i added running into the mix. if you stop losing you can try adding more work in and see if it breaks the stalemate. if it doesnt you have have reached the level your thermostat is set at, and your body may refuse to lose any more. once you are there you have to work on acceptance. as long as you are healthy and happy whatever weight you end up is fine.

You should exercise more intensely and for longer periods of time.

The real answer I think has three parts.

First, is switch the diet. If you were on a particular diet for a period of time, you should have noticed what your body responds to. Try to switch to a diet that is in line with what you've observed.

Second is change the exercise routine. The changes do not have to be drastic. If you were doing 3 days per week cardio, and 2 days weight, change it to 2 days cardio/3 days weights, or if you were doing 5 days cardio and weights, split it up. If it doesn't yeild results, do some other changes - like switch from freeweights to stationaries, etc.

The thing about changing is - do not do it all at once. Change one thing at a time. That way, if you do start progressing, you will know exactly what works. Change one thing, then second, then third.

Finally, we have a tendency to want to look like someone else. I would imagine that your number of 50 pounds is based on something someone else told you - like a doctor, or a model, or some magazine. 30 maybe the number to loose for you. If after changing all these things, you are still stuck, just continue doing what you are doing without worrying about loosing more, as you will not be able to do so without doing some serious harm to yourself.

Good luck!
