WOW, what a question....I don't think I have enough room here to write all there is to know about that. I'll try to give an overview and just hit the highlights. Everything taken in by the body, solid or liquid starts the metabolism. So it starts when your born and ends when you die. You body gets the energy it needs from the food you eat by metabolism. In short is a collection of chemical reactions that takes place int the body's cells. It convert the fuel in the food we eat into the energy needed to power everything we do, from moving, thinking, growing. Specific proteins in the body control the chemical reactions of metabolism, and chemical reactions are coordinated with other body function, This is required to keep our cells healthy and working.
After food is eaten, molecules in the digestive system called enzymes break down proteins into amino acids, fats into fatty acids and carbs into simple sugars Both sugar and fatty acids can be used as an energy source for the body. All these components are absorbed into the blood which transports them to the cells. Once in the cells other chemical components metabolize these compounds. The energy is either used, or stored in body tissues, such as the liver, muscles and body fat.
Overall it's really a balancing act involving two kinds of activities that go on at the same time. The building up of body tissues an energy stores and the breaking down of both to generate fuel for the body.
So when someone tells you they think they can loose weight by just not eating.....I think you can see, just by this short explanation they're doing more harm the they realize. To keep the metabolism up and running at top speed it needs constant food. That's why a lot of bodybuilders diet plan calls for seven small meals all during the day. Along with their intense routines they're metabolism if fired up and they can loose weight even thought they're eating all the time.
Think of it like this. A steam train runs because the coal is fed to the boiler to heat the water up to create steam that powers the train.....what happens when there's no coal left to feed the boiler.....the train will loose power and may just stop running.
Eat right, enjoy the food. It's fuel for everything we do.
