Is there any real help for a person who is addicted to food?!

Question: This is a real question so please don't just say eat less exercise more. I went to my doctor and that is what she said to do.(As if I hadn't already thought of that!) I don't have a lot of money to go to a spa or anything like that. I do have health insurance thought. But this is more than a food issue. It is an addiction issue. I have tried and failed so many things. I am thinking about having lapband surgery. But that still won't address the addiction. What can I do?

You first should look into the 12 step programs, mainly Overeaters Anonymous. I'd drop into AA sometimes, just to hear how people can become addicted to something. I'd substitute food in place of the word alcohol, but the behaviors are all the same. Obsessing over food and then compulsively eating. When I felt bad, I wanted to feel good, and any addiction would work, but food was the most enjoyable for me. Once I looked at my compulsive behaviors, and realized that even the TV ads, and cookbooks, and cooking magazines coming into my home were tempting me, I realized my drug of choice was/is food. I'm no better than a drunk; no worse than one...I just need to look at my problem and then do something about it.

Lapband surgery won't fix what is making you sad. Learning to deal with life's problems, from the past or now, is the only way to get healthy and make good choices. I sometimes go over this phrase when tempted: Am I feeling Hurried, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. If I am any of those (HALT) then I have to take care of that...hurried, then slow down; angry, find out what hurt you, lonely, call a friend, or tired, take a nap. This stops acting out for me.
Good luck. And bless you that you know this is more than a spa issue. Love yourself, and try an AA program. You don't have to speak up, just listen to their stories. I always sat in the back, but learned so much. Have a great day. You can do this!! But, if nothing changes, nothing changes.

look for a substitution

Go to a therapist honey.

eat healthy. you could still eat but just eat right.

oh and i heard fish is really good and doesn't have as much fat as meat :)

Any type of surgery (as you said) will not fix the problem. I've read that a lot of surgergeries like that actually lead to other addictions like drugs, sex, and more commonly alcohol. Dr Phil wrote a book about weight loss - not sure how you feel about him. As with any addiction you have to really want to quit for yourself and your healt for it to work. You also need the support of family and friends.
Good luck overcoming this.

Maybe a therapist can help if you think it's psychological. It sounds like your replacing food with something that is missing in your life. You need to think of food as fuel for your body as gas is to a car.
If you have health insurance this should be covered.

DO some other stuff that you like other than food that can take your mind off from food. Like, art or games xD..

wow...have you tried maybe a free clinic to where you could maybe talk to a shrink, to see why you are addicted to food?
you have to make it a mind set to do what you just said eat less excersise more.. food can be addictive just like drugs, but if you really have it set in your mind to change your eating habits you can.. but its up to you

Well im not sure for sure, but i know a girl who had the same problem and i just recently saw her and she looks great. I asked her what she did and she told me she went to uweightloss. Apparently it actually works.

If you really are addicted to food, ask your doctor to recom-
mend some psychiatric help for you!

Best of luck to you!

personally i always need to have something to chew on myself and thus reach for the fridge..but if there's nothing there then oh well, i just get back to work.
just don't buy so much..or buy healthy foods- take a friend shopping with you so that they can help control impuse buys.
set some goals as to eat less every day..little by little..there's really no way to control yourself in this situation unless you only buy food that you don't quite like,
it's a will power really..and if you have none, get a friend/roomate or someone who can slap your food from your hand when you're tempted.

Hi, i think the problem here is actually in you mind. Only you can adress this issue, If your eating to much its clearly a comfort thing, i tend to eat allot when i find myself bored or unhappy. I think you need to take a look at your lifestyle, friendship groups and hobbys. If you had somehting new that you could be doing or somehting that you enjoy you wouldnt be eating as much. Theres lots of clubs out there and its a great way to meet people. A tummy tuck or somehting similar isnt the answer its the lazy way out and its costly. Plus if you loose it "manualy" you would have somehitng to be proud of. hope this helps and all the best. Your the answer that your looking for.

There are some websites online you might want to check out. They offer help, advice and support from others who have the same issues. I would really check it out, I have spoken to a few people with the same issue and they said it really helped them.
Good Luck

The only way I know is "Overeaters Anonymous". You don't go on any diets, unless you decide to, and slowly change the way you act. I'm retired now, but the hardest thing I ever did was quit drinking in AA, 22 years ago. No one has to drink, dope, gamble, etc, but I really take my hat off to OAs who eat every day and still never go overboard. Try it, it's free, and nobody waves any flags or has any axes to grind.
