Pre gastric bypass surgery diet?!

Question: I am going to have gastric by-pass surgery and I have been given a pre-operative diet that I am supposed to be on for two weeks before surgery. It's 1000 cal, all sugar free, high protein, no solid food. I'm just wondering why. Are they trying to have me lose as much weight as possible before surgery or is maybe it a process of making sure the stomach is completely empty? I guess I'm just wondering how important it is to comply with such a strict diet

It's VERY important to adhere to the diet they give you. You can suffer major complications if you don't follow it strictly.

A high-protein, calorie restricted diet can be useful prior to surgery, because it can decrease the size of the liver, which can shorten operating time.

Adopting a healthy, reduced calorie diet plan prior to bariatric surgery gets you into the habit of eating less, eating healthy and making the essential dietary changes that will be required after your bariatric surgery, and for the rest of your life.

**EDIT**
For those who think that having the surgery is the "easy way out", you couldn't be more wrong. Many people who have the surgery only have it as a last resort, after numerous diets and fitness programs. Some people simply can not lose weight, no matter what they do... either because their body functions differently, they metabolize food differently, or because they're on medications that prevent them from it.

There's nothing "easy" about gastric bypass at all. You have to literally learn to eat all over again. You have to give up many of the foods that you love. Alcohol... birthday cake... popcorn... even bubble gum. You can't ever drink with your meals again. You have to take ONE BITE of food every ten minutes... if you eat too fast, it will stack up and make you vomit... or, you'll get terrible diarrhea.

The majority of the people who have this procedure really are using it as a last resort. As for the people who do it because they think it's easy?? They're SO wrong!! :)

IF sugar is high no surgery can be done. So as a precautionary measure that for sugar and blood pressure doctors have taken this course of action.

You're taking the easy way out....if you excersize and eat right, you can loose without surgery....btw no matter what you will have saggy skin with that surgery b/c u loose too quickly....good luck though....oh yes and like any ohter surgery it is IMPERATIVE that you follow thier diet?

only you can make the choice of the operation you should call the hospital or the doctor and ask them him or her to explain why this high protein diet i had one friend passed i had 2 friends works wonders i had one friend still having trouble i understand there are allot of Vitim's you are to take lot of pain when first done -i would tell you have the operation -i would not tell you not to have it - choice of complications or success should be up to you -but love you regardless -
