Cheat days are important for no other reason than they help control the cravings.

I would however ask for moderation on cheat days or you wind up destroying a lot of the hard work you put in by putting some weight back on.

I would suggest limiting it to a cheat meal once a week if you have low self control, or take the entire day for a cheat day if you take it easy.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to do a little more exercise the day afterwards.

whats good about a free day is that it can help you stay on track with your diet. the reason most diets fail is because people try to cut out too much too fast and most of us don't have the will power to cut things out of our lives that like that fast. a healthy eating style will be much easier kept if sometimes you do get a little taste of foods that aren't the best for you. i would say that moderation still is a good idea. don't go over board.

Everyone needs a free day every once in a while. No one can adhere to a strict regimen all the time. I would say let yourself enjoy, in moderation.

i say NO!
that is not a good idea. when people think of a free day, they think of eating whatever they'd like. and that leads to putting all the calories you tried so hard to lose back on again. which brings you back to level 1.
if you want to reset your metabolism, then go do cardio exercise or up your fiber intake a little more.
but if you really are craving something good, then go for healthier beneficial desserts like a small piece of dark chocolate, or even hot chocolate (which does not have very many calories), fruit with nonfat plain yogurt (pineapple, in my opinion, is best), etc.

but cheat days are NEVER a good idea!

If it helps control your cravings and keeps you on track to losing weight since you only do it once a week, its fine.

If it leads to multiple free days then there is no need for a free day, since that will ruin your diet.
