Why does dieting suck so bad?!

Question: I freakin hate this...it's like torture. I never feel full, or satisfied after I get done eating. I don't know why...it's been 6 days and I feel like such a little bit*ch for complaining...I just hate it though.

Dieting "sucks so bad" because we regard junk and snack foods as the norm instead of the exception to good nutrition that they truly are. Pizzas, burgers, fries, fried chicken, burritos, the whole range of convenience foods combined with our tendancy to drive everywhere and then park our butts in front of the TV have turned the USA into a nation of flabbos. We keep eating what they're selling and then feel deprived when we try to adapt our bodies and our palates to whole foods. Because of the amount of processed foods we eat, whole foods - that is, meals cooked from scratch, not made up out of a box or nuked in a microwave - can taste flat or uninteresting. The easiest fix for this is to get a cookbook, a good general cookbook like "How to Cook Anything" and become familiar with some basic spices.

You may not feel full if you're not eating enough protein. Bypass the rice cakes and other stereotypical "diet" foods and make your own food plan based on your likes and your body's needs. If you're a moderately active young woman, keep your daily caloric intake between 1800 - 2000 calories a day. Make those calories count, tho. Lean protein has more nutritional bang for the calorie buck than any bread-type item you can name and it fills you up better and works for you longer than anything else going. My usual breakfast is 3 ounces of ham and 1.5 ounces of cheese - altogether, 300 calories - and it keeps me going right until lunch. A bowl of Special K isn't going to do that for you.

Keep your goals realistic and remember that this is an ongoing process. I think women especially fall into this trap of "Oh, I'll go on a diet, lose weight, then I can eat whatever." Then we get discouraged when we don't see immediate results. A diet is never done because all of what we eat IS our diet. The question is not whether you are on a diet or not; the question is, is your diet the best one for your weight and overall health. In other words, is my diet full of junk food and high-fat, low-value nutrition, or is my diet comprised mainly of lean meat, fresh veggies, whole grains and plenty of water? Just because you set yourself up on a plan to eat smarter for your body does not mean you can't ever indulge in sweets or a burger platter, but it does mean that those things become rare treats, not a regular part of your food intake.

By cutting out crap food, eating lean meat (and lots of it!), leafy greens, cheese, olive oil and keeping hydrated, I dropped 80 pounds in less than a year between 2003 and 2004. I have successfully kept that weight off, even with periodic fluctuations of 7-10 pounds or so. Things I did to help myself out: I weighed myself on Sundays only. As I lost weight and undergrew my clothes, I got rid of them. No more "fat pants". If my pants start feeling tight, I know I need to make better choices and skip the periodic indulgences because I won't allow myself to buy in a larger size. I also kept only 2 pairs of sweatpants, both for the gym. It's really worked out well.

Of course, no discussion of weight loss is complete without a mention of exercise. It's important for a lot of reasons, but if for nothing else, it gets your blood moving, cleans out the crud and helps increase your metabolism. Maintaining a higher metabolism for a longer period of time increases the calories you burn during the course of the day. Don't set yourself up for failure by trying to train like an Olympian. You're not one. Neither am I. Neither are most people. Start slow, stay steady and keep at it.

Don't lose hope and don't lose faith in yourself. Don't compare yourself to others, no matter how hard that might seem, because everyone's body is different. What works for men doesn't always apply to women, and what works for one woman doesn't necessarily work for any other. You are you, with your own unique body composition. You may never be as thin as Angelina Jolie, but maybe that's because your body would fail you if you were. It would be great if society could get past the appearances of people and concentrate more on their substance, but how would the advertising agencies take advantage of that?

Hang in there. Strive for progress, a little every day. You'll be amazed at what you can do for yourself. Good luck!

Join the club. If I only hadn't eaten EVERY Christmas cookie that was put in front of me.

then go get some food.

Because you are trying to break habits that have been in place for years. Hang in there. The results will be worth it.

Your diet shouldn't limit you from certain foods. You can still have dessert and stuff, but at a limited amount. Eat a well balanced diet with fats and such included. But when eating bad foods eat much less of them. You want to find a diet that you can commit to for life not a month or two. Eat a well balanced diet for a healthy and satisfying life.

Come on man.....It's not supposed to be easy or there wouldn't be much fat people. Why does it suck? because your body likes as much food as it can get; the more energy, the better it will feel. This after 6 days? Just hang in there; once you start seeing results you will think less of food.

Because it's unnatural and wrong. You shouldn't diet. You should change how you think about food.

Mainly - just pay more attention to what you eat - especially the portion size. We Americans eat ridiculously huge portions. Take your time and put your fork down between bites. During the first 20 minutes of your meal your stomach won't tell you it is getting enough food. But 20minutes in you start feeling satisfied. If you have shoveled an entire feedbag down your throat in the first 15, you are going to eat much more than you need. Eating too much = getting fat.

Slow down.
Watch portions.
THINK!!! Do I really really want this? If yes - EAT IT. Don't deprive yourself of things that taste good. Just take a small amount of it. I lost 15 pounds in 15 weeks and had Haagen Daz at least 3 times a week. But I didn't eat other crap that was only OK. I saved it for the really good stuff! I LOVE FOOD. But I make sure if I am going to eat something fatty and sugary - it ain't gonna be ring dings.

If you are eating just out of boredom find something to do.
Exercising is a good choice.
