You seem to realize that restricting calories is not the answer.
In fact eating too little food can really alter you metabolism ... lower it .... you want to develop "life time" habits that help you control your weight not just while taking off those pounds/stones.... ( I like the English terminology... being over weight can be like carrying around a wheelbarrow of stones! :) )

So I want you to think about the rest of your life ... not just the next month or so.

You need to develop some healthy eating habits... and you need regular activity or exercise.

With both you need to start with a few changes that will have a big impact. These habits can be tweaked as you go along.

First you need to take a daily walk. (Research shows that this is the best way to balance food intake with activity.
There is an exception ... if you have joint problems, or are obese a work out or swimming in a pool is much kinder to your joints. I swim 3 or 4 days a week and walk on the days I do not get to the pool) I find that a walking buddy really helps motivate me when it comes to walking. Having a buddy makes it much safer for a woman walking and it also gives you other options... If you have a park/space near by you can toss a ball or a frisbee for a total body work out.

During bad weather you can take your walk to a shopping center or try dancing inside. You can even do as I am doing today... give your whole house a through vacuuming. yuck....

Second most helpful hint, I know. Drink water or plain tea... black coffee .... And eat your food.

Let me clarify. Drinking soda or juices really ups your calories with out giving you the satifaction of eating and feeling full. No calorie soda can actually make you feel more hungry. So drink water or plain tea... either black, orange, green or herbal with no milk or sweetner.

Eat your fruit... don't drink it.

Hint 3.. Eat plenty of small helpings of high protein/high calicum food several times a day (5 or 6) Your body was designed to digest and utilize food throughout the day.

Hint 4... Eat your veggies.... 7 to 10 servings of fruit and vegetables a day... a serving is 8 bites.

Hint 5. Eat whole grain foods like whole wheat, oatmeal and brown rice. These foods have more nutrients and they leave you feeling satisfied for longer periods of time.

Hint 6. Indulge your weaknesses with care. I have a sweet tooth... I know that if I purchase a large container of ice cream that I will eat the whole box within a day or two. So I just buy one ice cream bar a month... I also have a few little chocolates on hand... and ration them to myself.

Take these hints (start with the first because it is the most important) and make your own plan.

That is something you need to speak to a nutritionist about because although many think the Internet is all knowing it does not answer questions on a case by case basis. What works for others may not work for you.

I would suggest you to read about Mediterranean eating style and to make your own diet plan from the foods suggested there. Just eat small portions 4-6 times per day. This is the key.

WALK I stay away from running and jogging. It was drilled into my head that the force of impact can drive your spine up toward your head. Ya, you can laugh.. but I will tell you this.... when my car broke down, and I had to walk one mile to and from work (2 miles 5 days a week at 20 minutes per mile) I toned up like you wouldn't believe! I went from a snug size 7 to a loose 3 in only 3 months AND DID NOT DIET! (I do stay away from fast food they are total weight gain ! Cut down on soda. Without these 2 things you will drop weight like crazy! A guy I work with was way over weight...he got a job where he had to walk from point a to point z for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and now you just want to throw him a cookie. He lost so many pounds and looks toned. This guy went from a 230lb man to a now 170lb man. Just from walking! He still eats and drinks the same and never gave up his beer. ......
