Will my periods return ?!

Question: right here's the story.. i was diagnosed borderline anorexic.. after i lost 3 stone in 8 weeks and stopped eating. Naturally my periods stopped in july/august .. my doctor assured me they would return when a healthy diet was followed.. i know have a healthy diet of between 1250 and 1400 kcal a day and haven't lost any weight in 7 weeks(give or take a pound or 2 ). My doctor has confirmed that i am a healthy weight.. so don't argue with me on that .
i weigh 117 lbs and i'm 5'7... if i haven't dropped in weight,, how long will it take for my periods to return ? i'm 15 years old

the body requires a certain percentage of body fat in order to maintain its reproductive abilities, including the monthly period.

generally in teen girls and women this is around 15% body fat. if u have been anorexic, it may take u some time to get back to this level.

ur body mass index (BMI) is 18.3, which is still technically underweight. healthy weight is a BMI between 18.5 and 24, with ideal BMI for most people being in the 19-22 range.

basically what ur body is telling u is that if u havent gotten ur periods back within about 6 months at this, u may still be too underweight.

u may also need other types of treatment, including hormonal birth control pills, as an example.

take a look at this Go Ask Alice! entry for more info on getting ur periods back after being anorexic.

Yes they will. it will take time for them to regulate, but give it time. And keep up the good work!
