it does not necisarily hinder the process of losing wieght, but too much salt can raise your BP which kind of contradicts the point of losing wieght anyway. eliminating from your diet is the best thing you can do really.

plus fast food has high levels of sodium which will make it hard to lose weight

To an extent, yes. Sodium causes water retention. You may stop losing as much weight as you expect because you'll be losing fat, but holding on to water.

the only thing salt does is cause your body to retain more water (adding "water weight" to the scale), so it might seem like it would make you lose less weight but in reality it doesn't.

No. If you're retaining water it's probably because you're not drinking enough of it, not the salt. Cutting back on salt can be dangerous in the long term for people who are otherwise healthy. It can also make you feel lousy in the short run, and you will actually crave it. Sometimes your body knows what it's doing, and there are times when you should listen to cravings. We DO need some salt. Unless you have a heart condition or something and your doctor told you to limit your intake, you shouldn't worry about your salt intake as much as just eating healthy most of the time and not overeating.

Alcohol will bloat you more than salt. Lay off the booze!
