Why do so few guys join fitness classes at the gym?!

Question: I used to be very overweight....about 300 pounds....and joined a gym and went for hours everyday, 7 days a week, to lose weight...it was like boot camp....I took a lot of fitness classes like spinning, cardio kickboxing, step, etc. I noticed that I was usually the only guy in the class. Very few guys ever take fitness classes They prefer to lift weights by themselves or with a buddy. Classes don't seem to be a male thing. Why is that?

Ah they are just chicken and I think you're a legend ;)

It's amazing how quickly you can lose weight and look good taking classes like that. Some guys just do the weights and wonder why the weight isn't coming off. I guess because a lot of women do the classes they think it's "girly" - but if they took the time to try a few (especially spinning - eeek!) they'd see it's bloody hard work.

My husband used to do aerobics with me sometimes - but he just couldn't get the co-ordination happening, even though he is super fit.

The main thing is that guys have a muscle complex whereas women tend to be more cardio oriented. Classes tend to be more easily structured over a cardio theme than a weightlifting thing.

we want to lift weights and our sports must be of a competitive nature

Classes are way more aerobics oriented, and people oriented. The class can only proceed at the pace of the average participant, so there is no opening for competition. Therefore, a serious aerobic male (like a marathoner) will just go do his own thing.
More importantly, aerobics focus more on fat loss than muscle gain. Think for a second about who asks 'honey, do i look fat?'. Most men focus on muscle/ strength training. These are harder to structure in a class format, because the risk of injury should you be distracted by those around you is immense. (barbell falling on your head etc)

Besides, there is the childhood fear of any man (fit or unfit) that he may actually be such a weakling that there are SEVERAL women in the room who are fitter than him!

basically guys just want to build muscle, That's why we go to the gym in the first place.

Basically they don't want to take a bunch of crap from their buddies in the gym.

"So John, training with the ladies again huh?"

"Are we pushing you to hard mate? May be we could get the kiddie weights in here for you."

Thats a good question.
In my opinion, the classes are perceived as feminine by men.
I am in this mind framework as well.
The classes are somewhat soft and girly in our mind, even though they are a total oposite.

You will find me by the free weights lol...where the rest of my MANkind will be
