Walking speed on treadmill for losing weight?!

Question: I am currently walking at 3.5 miles/hr for an hour, but I am not exerting myself too much. I am worried that I am not doing enough to lose weight (yes, I am working on my diet, too). But I don't want to go too fast and move from the fat burning to the aerobics. What should my speed be on the treadmill if I want to maximize the fat burning?

You should really be walking on an incline (as long as your knees are ok). its a great fat burner. Your muscles will exert themselves much more and the more muscle you have on your body the more fat you'll burn during the day.. Definately raise the incline. Start at 2% then 2.5 then 3 and so on. Each time you work out, push yourself a little further.. the best workouts are the ones that force the body to work outside of its comfort zone.. raise your heart rate enough to make sure your sweating!

Does your treadmil have the lift on it? If it does, raise that up, I know that always makes me feel like I am getting a better workout and it is burning more calories if you are walking up hill. And you can feel it in your muscles the next day, which is a good thing.

Alright, as a trainer, I always recomend interval training on treadmills. Heres a plan that works for a lot of people.

5 mins warm up on speeds 3.5 to 4
5 mins light jog at speeds 5.5 to 6
5 mins Run at speed 8 to 9.5
5 mins light jog speed 5.5 to 6
5 mins cool down speed 3.5 to 4

This workout takes just 25 minuets and it does it all. Cardio, fat burn, calorie burn, and aerobics.
