Elliptical Training?!

Question: When elliptical training, is it better to hold on to the handle, or not?

Answers: When elliptical training, is it better to hold on to the handle, or not?

Its better to hold them if they are the type that move in proper coordination as your are stepping. For example as the right leg is extended in front of you, the right arm should be nearer your body and vice versa for the left side. This cross-crawling pattern is very healthy for your brain, as it helps to "connect" right and left halves.
If the machine you are using has fixed handles avoid them unless you are unsteady and risk falling. After coordination improves go without in this case.
Also...many have heart rate monitors on the handles. Use it to help you maintain your target heart rate zone. To calculate use the formula 220-Age and multiply that number by .7 and .8 to find your range.
Also there is no need to exceed 1/2 hour. Cheers

I think so. It gives support so that your body doesnt hurt that much.

Not. It will force your body to use stability muscles it wouldn't use if you hold on, It will also work you harder. We tend to put some of our energy into the handles when holding on.

Do the handles move? If they move then yes it is better to hold on and even use your arm muscles to get going, this will also help if you use the program that creates resistance.

If the handles are stationary I think it's best to not hold on, although I admit, I ALWAYS hold on because I feel like a weirdo with movements if I don't. Also, I don't feel stable and tend to go slower if I don't hold on.
