Should I be doing more?!

Question: In the last couple years I've put on about 50lbs, mostly this is in the abdominal area (beer gut, lol).

For about the 3 weeks or so I've been limiting my daily caloric intake to about 1100-1300 calories a day, and I've been going to the gym 3-4 times a week and burning 600-800 calories on the eliptical machine each time I go. I've also been drinking only water (and orange juice with breakfast), I've completely given up soda.

Is this enough to help me lose the gut or is there something else I should be doing? And any idea how long I am looking at to lose about 40lbs?

I'm 6'0", 27 yrs old, and aiming to weigh about 170lbs.

yeah, looks good to me, try out some weights tho, you know muscle consumes calories constantly even while you sleep right?

Make sure you get enough food! 1100 is too low, try to shoot for 1400 or 1500!

Sounds like a good plan. Make sure and check with a licensed medical professional though.

Like Nate says, weights are important. People think it is just to bulk up but not true. They are critical to weight loss and hell, if you look ripped, what's wrong with that. Don't be intimidated by weights. You don't have to lift a lot and you don't have to look like Arnold. Just work them muscles and they will burn calories for you 24-7.

sounds like you're in the right track. this might interest you:

Hi, Like Nate mentioned your caloric intake is low.

Here are some tips:

Breakfast - means 'breaking the fast' when you are sleeping you are fasting. When you wake up you are suppose to break 'fast' and continue eating. By you eating food in the morning you are helping your body repair muscle and speed up your metabolism.

Fiber - Increase your fiber intake. The average American gets around 15 grams of fiber a day. Recommended is around 30 grams. Fiber helps stabilize your sugar levels, help s you feel fuller and be regular in the bathroom.

5 Meals - Try eating 5 smaller meals a day. That's breakfast, lunch and dinner, in between snacks. By eating good quality food every 3 - 4 hours, your body goes into an 'Anabolic' state (which means building muscle), the more firm muscle you have the more fat you burn. And again by eating 5 smaller meals a day your sugar levels are stabilize.

Avoid - Eating excess carbohydrates at night time when you are less active. Excess carbs if not burned will get stored as fat. If you are active or exercise at night this won't apply.

FATS - Good fasts (EFA's) Essential Fatty Acids are important for many functions of your body. These fat help you burn fat, give you energy, are good for you skin, hair, nails.

Avoid junk food, fried food, too much sodium, excess sugars
