What is "water weight"?!

Question: I've been changing my eating habits, and exercizing more for the last 3 weeks and the 1st 2 weeks I lost 5 lbs(3 lbs one week, and 2 lbs the next). Then this week I lost another 5 lbs in one week, but my mom says its just "water weight". When I asked her what it meant, she looked at me like I was stupid lol. What does that mean? ?

I think what is typically meant as water weight would be the daily fluctuations of weight that might constitute up to 12 percent of your total weight.

Since you are talking about measurable losses of weight over weeks, it is your mom that is mistaken.

Its good to average out your measurements over time and take one measurement for a whole week. Depending on what time you eat/sleep/exercise/& weigh yourself, the measurement itself will likely vary over days. If you average out a whole week of measurements into one measurement for the week, you will get a more truthful representation of how your total body weight is trending.

Water weight is... water. Water you store for sweat and other bodily fluids. Basically, you lose water weight through sweat, pee, etc. That's why some people exercise with a billion layers on in the summer or do "hot yoga." The more you sweat, the more water you lose, and, in turn, the more weight you lose.

I hope that made sense.

like when ever u drink alot u will gain it back.. but u prob wont. im doing a 1200 cal diet and its awesome ive lost 6 pounds in 5 days... jus eat 1200 cals a day

Water weight is just the water in your body that sits there- it's as simple as that. Because our bodys are made up of mostly water, its the easiest thing to lose.
