Apart from banana's what other food has a calming effect?!

Question: Many carbohydrates have the ability to cause a calming effect- this is why people who have issues with anger, depression etc tend to overeat. But, avoid anything with caffeine or a high processed sugar content ( like caffeinated sodas such as Mt. Dew, Pepsi etc)

Some people believe turkey is calming, but this is a myth - there isn't enough tryptophan in a turkey to calm a mouse. You'd need to eat 5-6 lbs of turkey to get that 'calming effect'.

But, what causes the 'sleepy' effect is the amount you eat more than the content. What makes people calm and sleepy after a big meal is the stomach is demanding a large amount of blood to be detoured to it so it can process the food, and this draws blood away from the brain & other organs - which makes you feel sleepy.

Sipping/drinking chamomile or Linden tea, or other herbal soothing non-caffeinated teas are proven to have a calming influence on humans. Use caution with sweetners as sugar revs your system....if you must sweeten the tea use honey. A few drops of lemon juice are ok also.

Another simple beverage to help you calm down is to take a cup of boiling water, add a tablespoon of lemon juice & two tsp of honey. Sip on this while listening to some soft music - classical is best.

If you are wound up, try putting yourself into a mental 'safe place' ...you imagine a wonderful place that is EXACTLY the place you would feel safest. Some people imagine the womb, others a room with comfy chairs, quiet music etc. I like to imagine I am resting on a white beach by blue waters on my own personal island....there are a couple of sailboats in the distance, some white fluffy clouds floating by, a gentle warm breeze is tickling me, and tall palm trees are waving in the breeze. I try to imagine the smell of tropical flowers and the salt in the breeze. I feel the grittiness of the sand, the edges of my beach chair etc. It works every time!

I use this mental imagery with my patients before and after surgery - they calm down and their vital signs improve.

Try it

Good luck.

hash cakes work well.

I think the calming effect of bananas is psychological.

ice cream

Mountain Dew and pezz

Milk

what ever food/drink you enjoy best. Me a cuppa or a beer

I didn't know banana's were calming..

green tea leaves for certain

iv heard pasta but it could b a lie

Believe it or not, if you can't sleep they tell you eat Lettuce, the middle of the lettuce has a more powerful effect, it does work. Makes you sleepy.

Warm milk, chamomile tea, saltines to calm a stomach. I'm not sure what you are asking here. Usually warm, non-caffinated drinks are better than foods for calming. Turkey has Ltriptophan in it though which is why it makes you sleepy after thanksgiving dinner. You could give that a try.

Two for the hippies, Valerian root tea, and chamomile infusion too

How about something warm and yummy like apple cinnamon oatmeal? It is soft and calming...

Herbal teas, like peppermint, chammomile, and ginger.

turkey and cheese (real cheese, not Kraft singles)

I've heard that plain boiled rice is good - something like Risotto

Turkey has natural L-Tryptaphan which has a large calming effect. (Which is why people feel sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner!).

Most nutritionists would recommend choosing a high carbohydrate, low protein snack, such as a piece of toast with peanut butter or a small bowl of yogurt with fruit as a natural sedative, but any carbohydrate will soothe.

like some above said, I didn't know bananas where calming.

I thought they are too packed with natural sugars to have a calming effect. If anything, bananas should cause you to bounce off the walls with all the energy it gives you ...

Sunday lunch. I feel like doing sod all after it so it must be calming.
But for comfort food it has to be a bacon buttie!

icecream porridge also drinking cocoa

chocolate!
actually - the previous answer is probably the best!

turkey, warm beverages without caffeine, milk.
