So about sugar free drinks?!

Question: So what's the downside about sugar free drinks? I mean I know it's got no calories and all, but there's gotta be a downside to getting that artificial sweetener (because all sugar-free drinks are somewhat sweetened with artificial sweetener). What're the effects? Do they take place immediately or in a few years? I read an article about these people who chewed sugar-free gum for several years and their gums got messed up or something, I can't remember the exact effect.
