You already know the heart is a muscle. When we exercise, the muscles require more blood more many reasons: nutrients, waste (such as lactic acid), and oxygen. Higher intensity means the muscles need more and more nutrients to avoid fatigue.
Too compensate, the heart must pump more blood in less time, meaning heart rate and stroke volume, and therefore, cardiac output increase. The myocardium adapts just as any other muscle (very noticeable in the left ventricle...pumping blood throughout the entire body) and when at rest does not have to work near as hard. Resting heart rate is a good indicator of how fit an individual is. My resting is anywhere from 52-58 bpm. Cross country runners are typically high 30's to high 40's.
The benefits of this is that at rest, the heart does not have to work near as hard...more muscle means it is easier to move the same load, and takes less beats. It also means it can move a higher stroke volume without taxation, getting more blood to your body.
Hope I helped.

When you exercise, your heart starts pumping faster so over time, lots of exercise will strengthen the muscles in your heart

you don't get effin diseases
it doesn't take a doctor to know that

well, the more your heart gets used to working the healthier it is. so if you run a lot, it will be able to pump blood to the rest of your body more effinciantly, meaning it would pump less times, and be able to pump more blood at once.

It strengthens your heart muscles, improves circulation, and you heart pumps more efficiently. That also means that you heart gets more oxygen/nutrients and removes waste products more efficiently because circulation also includes the heart. In the end, you heart doesn't need to work as hard!

In really simple terms, the heart is a muscle, like any other. When you work it, it gets stronger, and a little bit bigger. Any work that uses your muscles causes them to need more oxygen, because this is the main source of energy. To get more oxygen, they need more blood, which requires the heart to pump harder and faster. You'll also breathe faster to take in more oxygen, which is just as important. In this way cardio improves the function of your heart and intercostal (muscles around the ribs that help you to breathe)muscles and makes you fitter - able to keep going for longer before your muscles run out of oxygen.
