Less fat, more sugar... more fat, less sugar, which is worse for weight loss?!

Question: I noticed in some items (cheese, milk, etc.) that the less fat it has, the higher the sugar content. I'm trying to lose a few pounds and was wondering which will slow down weight loss more... grams of fat, or grams of sugar?

Very observant! It's a complicated answer. This is true; many times, manufacturers will lower the fat content of an item so that they can market it with a "low-fat" or "no-fat" label. It's difficult to answer this question, but if you are looking to lose weight, I would urge your primary concern at this point to be a "low-calorie" approach. You need to reduce your energy stores by burning more through exercise or eating less calories. So, take a look at the products with more or less of each and see which will provide more calories with a comparable serving. I will say; however, that sugar is a deadly foe in ways that fat is not. Though fat has more calories per gram (9 cal/g) versus carbohydrates (sugar - 4 cal/g), sugar will be harmful in different ways. Sugar raises your blood glucose level which leads to glucose intolerance (potentially diabetes) and also contributes to aging by the crosslinking of your body's serum proteins. All in all, refined sugar is essentially a poison for your body. After you've lost your weight, I would suggest cutting down on both sugars and fats. Instead, research and look for low glycemic index foods with carbohydrates that don't act as fast acting sugars but rather long sources of energy (like whole grain cereals or pastas). As well, protein, in moderate amounts will provide you will needed amino acids and long lasting energy. Fat should also not be discounted - you need it for many purposes in your body, but in moderate amounts and from the right sources. Especially look to get fats that contain more essential omega-3 fatty acids as opposed to omega-6 fatty acids (a higher 3 to 6 ratio is good for cardiovascular health). Healthy sources include fish and a olive oils. Avoid trans-fats and saturated fats from animal sources in favor of unsaturated fats from plant sources. Good luck with your weight loss! Remember to do it slowly and surely as a lifestyle change - a 3500 calorie deficit will produce a 1 lb weight loss. Slow and steady, that's the way.

It all depends on your body type, which is why there is no such diet that works for every body!

If you are a mesomorph, fats are ok , carbs are not. If you are an ectomorph, carbs are ok, fats are not.

Both are bad.

Eat healthy things instead.

Good question - and it depends on the kind of fat. Some fats are good for you - like olive oil, and nuts. Cheese is not bad. I am not a fan of cow dairy products, but in general you are better off looking at the glycemic index of foods - not calories, sugar, or fat. If it is high in sugar,it wil be high glycemic though - and you want low glycemic. I'd rather see someone eating sugar, than artificial sweeteners though. A good general rule is - the closer to the way it is in nature, the better it is for you. Forget the fat-free cheese. It is bad for you. Another easy rule is - if you can't pronounce it, it probably isn't good for you to eat. (Read a few labels and you'll know what I am talking about!)
