5 minutes of exercise here and there?!

Question: I'm a beginner at working out. Sometimes I get on the treadmill and 5 minutes is all it takes to tire me out (pathetic, I know) Is it just as good to exercise 5 minutes here and there as it is to do 1/2 hour at a time? Will I burn more calories if I get the whole 30 minutes in at one time?

It is okay to start like that, but you will burn more calories doing the half hour at a time. Don't worry your body will quickly acclimate to the amount of work its doing, so you will soon start to notice that you can walk more. Also by doing it gradually you won't be as sore, and more prone to quitting overall, and you won't be binging on the eating because your overdoing it. Five minutes is okay, kick it up every couple of days by a minute, until you get to your goal. Make sure you have a time goal, it makes it easier, and good luck.

You gotta start somewhere. Saying "5 minutes isn't worth it" gives you a "reason" to stop. Don't believe it!

Obviously 5 minutes isn't as good at 15, and 15 isn't as good as 30...otherwise everybody would be doing 5 minute workouts instead of spending hours at the gym!

But 5 minutes a few times a day is INFINITELY better than NOTHING! Build up slowly...if you're doing 5 minutes 3x this week, go for 6 minutes 3x next week. 7 minutes if you're feeling good!

Seriously, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TALKED TO YOUR DOCTOR to make sure you're safe.

Start with what you can do, focus on what you've accomplished, and challenge yourself to do more/better faster as you can!

You're already moving in the right direction, and anything you're doing is better than nothing! Don't get discouraged.

Good luck! Stick with it!
