How to get into a healthy routine?!

Question: I have no problem exercising, I run everyday. But, I seem to just eat what I want, when I want, and then go and run it off. I'm not gaining weight, but I know that what I'm doing isn't healthy. I eat a lot of food, and a lot of junk because I never have time to actually sit down and have a meal. If I'm not working or at school, I'm studying. I never take the time to stop studying and eat, because then I can never get back into "study mode" so I always just make a can of vegetables or something for dinner, and it obviously doesn't fill me up. That leads to snacking on junk food all the time. I have two roomates, so I can't really control what food is bought, and there are so many temptations, you know? And, me being me, I have no self control when it comes to food, ha. A lot of the time I won't eat dinner at all, and I'll just eat, and eat, and eat all night long. Then the next morning I'll run a few miles or something. Like I said, I'm not gaining weight, and I don't want to lose

WiseGirl84 and Ride Seeker have very good suggestions so I'll just throw in my 2 cents. What I have done is to discipline myself. You almost have to schedule your meals as best as you can. Your work schedule and school schedule are set so it would be best to work around it and plan for dinner before you study. You may want to plan your meals out for the week before you go grocery shopping to help preparing meals go quicker. A typical week would be like grilled lemon herb chicken over brown rice on Monday. Stuffed mushrooms on Tuesday. Spaghetti with turkey Italian sausage on Wednesday. Broiled salmon over brown rice on Thursday. All can be done in under 30 minutes if you're prepared. You just need to organize yourself and it's pretty easy to get into habit. I'm pretty active like you so I'm not too worried about the calorie intake of those meals but everything in moderation right? Ride Seeker has breakfast so I don't need to go there.

The best way to control snacking is to not have them readily available which is hard in your case with your roommates. The next best thing is to control what you snack on...as Ride Seeker said, go pick up some fruits. They're much better snacks. String cheese is one of my favs to snack on. You could also pick up premade salads like at the grocery deli. They're pretty filling and come in few varieties so you could have that for dinner instead of the can of veggies. Pick up a couple or so, they last a while in the fridge unopened. You can even continue to study while you eat. I would not go with the frozen foods that much because of the sodium content. It's hard to find a single serving meal that doesn't have more than 35% DSV of salt. It's used primarily as a preservative but bad for you if you don't watch your intake. Water is a good way to curb your snack cravings as Ride Seeker says but when you have to snack make a wise decision. You'll see in time that your decisions will become second nature and don't feel bad if you happen to grab a bag of chips every now and then...just put a dollar in the "I gave into junkfood jar" or do 20 pushups.

you're hot

Everything is up to you. No one can control what you put into your body. As far as everything goes, I recommend you buy a water bottle and drink as often as possible. I don't think 8 glasses of water is reasonable because when you're full of water, you're full. That's the first simple step to being healthy. I know people who lost 5 lbs in 2 weeks because they weren't getting adequate water before. I understand you don't want to loose weight but drinking water on a consistant basis is a good way to being healthy. As far as snacks go, you should eat protein bars. They are good for you except maybe the sugar they have but the water will just cancel it out. Good luck on being healthy and remember it's not just a goal, being healthy is a lifetime journey.

i am also starting this journey. i tell you what i would do. you've already got therunning. i love to run. id love to know how u can go a 'few miles' after one im tired.

the eating i could help you with.

buy lean cuisine paninis. they are actually good and a good portion size. do you have access to a kitchen? if yes, buy some veggies. ie. cauliflower, brocolli, strink beans, squash eggplants. try this grain called quinoa. it looks like rice but really not rice. taste yummy. cook it up and add some pine nuts and some dried cranberries. so delicious. since your away at school you might as well take advantage of the food, you have to decide that you want to lose weight and not give in to the pizza and pasta stations. have a little rice ( you need carbs to sustain you) veggies and some protein. you'll drop weight fast and it's healthy.
for snacks, have prunes *they dont make me go to the bathroom but if u hav a sensitive stomach i wouldn't recommend it* pickles *five calories each) plain rice cakes. popcorn with butter *not extra) and parmesan cheese on top.do you like hummus? thats a great snack too!
give it a try.
try to decide that you wont eat after a certain time, brush your teeth! toothpaste makes me less hungry and no i dont eat it, after 7 i just brush my teeth so i wont snackbc eating makes ur mouth taste nasty
email me if you need anymore help!

You and I share something... the want to eat right, and the lack of time. I found the following to be Helpful:
It takes the same amount of time to stop at the fruit market as it does to stop at a fast food place and eat. Pick up a few pieces of your fav fruit (apples, bananas, grapes) that you can just grab and eat on your way out the door. This will solve your snacking issue.
As for your eating issue, it takes a little discipline to get in the habit of eating at home. Breakfast is fast and good anytime of day, Toast an english muffin, fry 1 egg (Be sure to crak the yolk) and throw a sloice of cheese on it. You have a bfast sandwhich to go in less than 5 min. Grill cheese and a soup is also something quick. Vienna hot dogs and mac n cheese cups. Tuna in a pouch, add a little black pepper, and put it on a peice of bread.

Try drinking water when you are in snack mode too, it helps you with the hunger feelings.
Good luck.

NOTE: some people are really dumb.. see the 1st comment.

try avoiding reality tv and eating crap

First of all,its a good thing you know junk food is not so good for your health so you run, but you have to descipline yourself by being conscious of what you eat. You may not have a control of what your room mates buy,but you have control of you. Sometimes you cant just help it,I know what you mean. Descipline is all you need and dont stop running. You drink water! That is GREAT. You need alot of water to stay healthy. It's good you are not adding weight, but consider what effect its going to have on you health in the long run. I drink a lot of oranges, it makes me hungry, so i dont have time to each junk. As soon as i get hungry i go for some real meal.Hope it works for you.

keep fresh fruits and vegetables close by and munch on them when you get the urge to eat. Granola bars are good to.

You are totally on the correct path. Good luck.
