Is cardio really a waste of time?!

Question: I read that cardio is useless and you really need weight training to get results? What happens if someone does only weight training and no cardio? Will they automatically bulk up? Or just shape the body??

that is crap. i lost the first thirty some pounds cycling (cardio with no weights) i added weights later as i started getting in shape, mainly because i wanted some mass and didnt want to be skinny. you can lose weight on weights alone, if you do them right. they raise your hearrate, and burn more calories when you are at rest as they grow.

That's a load of bull.

I lost over 60 pounds on cardio alone; I did a bit of weight training in between (to tone myself). I did 45-60 minutes of running on the tredmill 6 times a week, and the weight melted off in under 3 months. It's been over three years since then, and I have kept it off.

Who ever said that is a total idiot. You should balance weight lifting and cardio. I hate cardio but the results are unquestionable.

Cardio is probably the most important thing. Weight lifting is important, but cardio burns calories. If you only did weight lifting you'd gain muscle, but you would still have fat(maybe not a lot, but some) convering all the muscle you gained.

weight training is very important to increase your resting metabolic rate.. you won't "bulk up" unless you end up lifting VERY heavy weights.. cardio is useful for burning calories, but it doesn't have as much long-term benefits as strength training.. although if you're really out of shape, cardio is useful because it strengthens your heart..

If you just want muscle, then cardio is not that beneficial. But if you want to be healthy, have a strong heart, good lungs, low cholesterol, and many other benefits, then the cardio is the way to go. I do a little of both, to get all benefits.

Ive never heard this- hmm- well you need both
cardio for fat loss
strength training for toning

if you dont do cardio then its possible that you can "bulk up" or really you would be strong but under the fat

if you do cardio w/out strengh training then its not so bad but, you wont be as strong, but also you wont be as toned

Not at all

No it is not! We do it in the army all the time! I never use weights and I am in very good shape!

cardio should be part of anybody's fitness plan. most people don't do it because they don't like to run, so they just lift weights and look big and fat. it's stupid because they don't realize that their muscles would look a lot better if they just burn off that layer of fat that sits on top of it. cardio is the answer to that. doing cardio will get you leaner and more toned so that your muscles have more definition in them.

no it woks a lot

I was just told the same thing, that Cardio is exactly as it says it is heart training so if you want a good strong heart it's great!! But weight training will add muscle which is a fact that muscle burns more calories than fat so if you build more muscle mass, just sitting you can burn more calories. And it truly will protect you from osteoporosis, since muscles are attached to bone. So I think there should be more research about this.

take it from a former 300lb woman..cardio is EVERYTHING! Weight training alone only bulks up your muscles, even if you use light weights, its not enough to burn calories which melts the fat. You might have misread that article....the use of both cardio and light weight training does the job much better.
Like I spent 2 years at the gym working 6 days a week running and lifting a few weights but the biggesdt change happend when i introduced lunges with weights, squats, high intensity cardio and a slower pace walking uphill on the threadmill....in two months my legs became firmer and leaner, I have a butt now, my arms shrunk and have little muscle bunnies as i call them. and the love handles melted. Of course I still show up 6 days a week and eat 6 times a day according to my personal calorie needs. But dont ever lose cardio..it works ..period....other exercises simply help you firm out.

no form of exercise that is performed properly is a waste of time. however the majority of people do not exercise at a high enough level of intensity to see the results that they desire. you need to constantly push yourself harder and harder to force your body to adapt and become more efficient. if today you run/walk on the treadmill for 60 minutes at level 4 and travel 8 miles, the next cardio day the goal should be 8.1 miles at level 4 in the same 60 minutes. the next day 8.2 miles, etc. this is how you increase cardio vascular performance by performing more "work" in the same amount of time.

regarding weight training. the diet that you follow determines the size of the muscles not the amount of weight that you lift. you don't gain muscle with out a caloric excess in the diet and with out training as heavy as you can, it's that plan and simple.

yes
