I quit smoking, how do I stop gaining weight?!

Question: I quit smoking on 10-18-07, but have been gaining a little bit of weight since. I obviously know physical activity helps, I've never been VERY active, but I'm by no means fat. I just want to know some easy ways to stop the weight gain associated with not smoking, it seems like I find myself eating a lot more now. Thanks

Well, the only way to stop gaining weight is to stop eating so much. Cut down on your portion sizes. Eat sensibly, for example, don't eat take away meals. These are always high in fat. Not only that but usually have hidden sugar and tons of salt added. Eat only fresh fruit and vegetables. Eat protein such as chicken (without the skin) and fish. Make up salads in the morning so that you can dip into them during the day if you feel peckish. Gaining weight after giving up smoking need not happen if you eat properly. Cut down on fat and fast foods, crisps, chocolate biscuits etc. It is the only way, I am afraid. More importantly is that you have given up smoking!! How brilliant is that. How much more healthy must you be now, weight gain or not??!!?? Give yourself a huge pat on the back and feel proud.
Cheers

That's because you are used to putting something in your mouth. Try to reduce your snacking and exercise more.

drink water instead of eating or chew gum so that you cant put food into your mouth.

If you find yourself wanting to eat, get something like celery or carrots. If you need to suck on something, use sugarfree candy rather than normal candy. This will help with unneccessary calories.

I guess you are eating as a way of occupying yourself instead of smoking, and also smoking can be an appetite suppressant so you don't eat as much.

I found that having fruit or something like carrot sticks around helped - when there was the urge to munch because I couldn't have a cigarette, I would eat those as doing the least amount of damage.

The important thing though, is that you have given up and putting on a little bit of weight at the moment is not the end of the world - because it is more important for your health that you stop smoking.

Other things that you could try would be dried fruit (easy to carry around) or chewing gum (though not too much as I am told that it has other side effects!).

Well done for giving up and keep going!

I have read that almost everyone who stops smoking gains about 30 pounds in the next few months. You have changed your metabolism and slowed it down a bit, remember cigarettes are a stimulus. In almost all cases, the weight will come off over a period of time when your body regulates itself. Meanwhile, you should eat a good, healthy diet and drink enough water. This will pass.
BTW, good for YOU!

Chew sugar free gum to keep you from lunging for the snacks.....it keeps your mouth otherwise preoccupied. Either that, or munch on lots of girl pie lol Also, drink plenty of fluids, preferably water. It will give you that full feeling. My doctor told me that when most people think theyre hungry theyre actually thirsty!!!

you can eat as much as u want as long as its a lot of vegetables and fruits, without dressing and all those add ons. The fiber in them would make u digest stuff quicker, and hence giving less weight to gain. On top of that its obvious cardio and exercises would help that process.

Do not go back for second's & walking 2-3 miles a day

with difficulty but generally you need to increase excercise for your metabolism as giving up smoking slows it right down.

Firstly, try and find something that could take your mind off smoking, for instance " swimming " then do this for a couple of weeks, also instead of snacking on junk try snacking on fruit or Veg. Always pick the healthier option.

Chew gum (get a variety of flavors) or chew on straws until the craving and habit vanish.

Congratulations! I recently quit smoking as well =] Ok here are a few facts and reccomendations. Fact 1: You are in the habit of putting something in your motuh when your happy, upset, or sad, or stressed, most commonly we replace the cigs with what? Food... =[ I know you are not very active but 30 minutes a day will make such a difference, I'm not saying hit the gym or run a marathon, but maybe go for a walk, walk the dog, go with one of your friends, or a significant other..... Try riding a bike if u dont liek to walk... Every night before you go to bed, put two 8oz glasses (so 16oz total) of water in the fridge, and as soon as you wake up before you do ANYTHING drink those two glasses of water! Studies have shown that drinking cold water, especially on an empty stomache will elevate your metabolism by 25%! The effect usually last 3-4 hours. If you get cravings for a sig or want a healthy, tasty snack, that will boost your metabolism, try a small handful (2oz) of lightly salted almonds and two COLD 8oz glasses of water, in no time you'll be ready for the beach or that special event! have a great day, contact me if u need more advice.

You have replaced the stoggy with the munchies...also your taste buds are clearing up and now have different effects on the system.

It's your daily habits you have not changed....when you were smoking and say was out walking you smoked as you walked...if you lightup when taking a break from yard work, smoked as you drove,
All those habits are still ther just in twinges of "feed me"
Try not to eat main meals after 8pm, if you stay up late then make sure your snackes are healthy...popcorn...try flavoring them yourself..spicy...
I even cooked some veggees to snack on....
veggees & dips...the spicer the foods the less you will hunger for .....make sure all food a chewed well....jaw to brain thing...
when you eat take the time to enjoy....

lastly..chew gum.....different flavors....sugar free candy..diabetic candy....rotate your snacks so as not to get bored.....try new goodies......

Keep reminding yourself...how much better you feel ...even if you don't seem to notice....did you know that your lungs will clear up in 10 years as if you never had smoked....
I have been a non smoker now for over 10 yrs, and I went cold turkey from 3-4 packs a day

good luck......

I think you should start exercicing your body, and also avold eating too much of fatty food, try as much as possible to take more fresh juice that contains more of limon, lime and grape to borne of excss fat from your body
