You need to eat to support your workouts. If you are trying to gain bulk....you would eat lots of protein, protein shakes etc..protein that's low in fat. If you are trying to maintain your weight with exercise and healthy eating.....then how much you need to eat would depend on your body fat%, weight, age and gender. I would say to maintain.....if you are male....eat about 3000 cals a day.....female, 2300-2500. If you are still trying to lose weight.....keep your calories around 1200-1500....1500-1700 if your male.

if you want to bulk up to a healthy lean body, eat a lot of meats and fish , after a work out you should drink your body weight in grams of protein , if you weigh 180 drink 180 grams of WHEY protein it repairs the muscles while still giving you monthly weight, and 2 cans of tuna is great it has 36 grams of protein.

i think what your friend means is that you should eat healthily. Having a proper diet during exercise is very important. Crash diets and exercise don't exactly fit nicely with each other. In order for exercise to work for you, a proper diet consisting of protein, carbohydrates and little fat is required on a daily basis.
Crash diets during exercise can give you muscle fatigue or other unnecessary injuries due to lack of proper nutrition. So even if you say that you will only be using a chest expender, proper nutrition is still vital for exercise efficiency.
