You can definitely use heavy weights, but as with any exercise you must perform good form and be smart so you do not injure yourself.

However the glenohumeral joint (main shoulder joint) is one of the most unstable joints in the body. You would certainly need a spotter or to use a machine. A heavy weight is considered what you can lift 4-6 times before failure.
