How can I improve my flexibility?!

Question: I'm a former dancer, but haven't seriously danced since high school (I'm turning 24 soon). I was shocked to find I can no longer do the splits. What are some ways I can work on getting my flexibility back...specifically in my legs.

Thanks!

This is what I do... lie on your back. keep one leg on the ground, and hold the other one and pull it to you without bending the knee... keep doing this with both legs until they both go well past 90 degrees (this might take a few days) you should be able to do a split then... just stretch the hamstrings...

Stretch on a regular basis--there is a great book by Bob Anderson on stretching that is fantastic.

apparently yoga helps, but what you need is a trainer, to have you do stretches, there are stretches you can do so that you can do the slits :)

Yoga & Pilates

Hatha yoga (or any type of yoga) is a great way to increase flexibility. That is not the only advantage, it also increases blood circulation and balance too! In fact, most stretches for sports come from some sort of yoga, but yoga also incorporates breathing techniques into it as well for added benefits. Your local library should have many books, DVD's and VHS tapes available!
