I heard that situps can misalign your back. Ab crunches are safer. Funny, earlier I saw a commercial for working your core muscles by doing crunches using a yoga ball. Also, the commercial for the Bender Ball makes sense because you get flexion and extension. Any exercises that work your upper and lower abs would be good. if you have fat around your tummy, you have to burn it off by doing cardio. situps alone wont help the flatness of it. spot reducing is not effective
