Snack while you exercise?!

Question: I work out with a friend sometimes. She gets on the treadmill for 30 minutes at a casually paced walk. While "exercising", she snacks on a bag of trail mix or peanuts. She claims that you should snack while exercising for energy. In my mind, if you eat WHILE you exercise, aren't you just canceling yourself out? You know what I mean? I understand a granola bar or something, but trail mix? I want to lost weight the right way, but if I keep taking advice from her, I'm afraid I'll just gain more weight. lol So..... should a person snack while exercising?

That sounds ridiculous to me. lol
While exercising, I think you should focus on your workout, not a snack.
A little snack before working out is ok, but not during it.

If a person is doing cardio at a slow enough pace to be able to eat, they're probably not getting the best workout.
While doing cardio, you're supposed to get your heart rate up enough so that it's hard for you to carry on a conversation, but not enough so that you can't breathe. lol

i wouldnt advise it.
If i were you, and wanted to snack, i would have a light high protien snack before working out (a small handful of nuts, maybe.) That way you have the energy do work out, it does take time to get to your body.

and while your excersizing, drink water, and other clear fluids.

Why not exercise while showering. That way she can get clean and exercise at the same time.
In the words of Carlos Mencea, your friend is a de-de-de.

no you shouldnt do that because first off when you finish excercising you will be starving because you have used the snacks for energy.
you should eat about 10/15 minuites after excercising....some people say that it would make your excercise pointles but its the opposit because your meabolic rate is going faster, so when you eat your body will burn it faster =]
hope i helped x

I'm shocked!

There's substantially more fat and calories in that snack than she burns off in the 30 mins. And she's at risk of choking herself!
Your friend will be leaving the gym less healthy than she went in! I'm really surprised the staff haven't stopped her doing this!

A casual walk really isn't doing your friend any good at all, unless she's massively unfit and overweight, but if she insists it's all she wants to do she could keep her hands busy by doing some very light dumbell moves at the same time.

If you're looking simply at caloric content, you're probably right. It all depends on the amount she is snacking on, but judging by your description it sounds like she's snacking the entire time.

As for the "exercising for energy" part, she's completely wrong. Putting solid foods like trail mix into your stomach and exercising combined decrease the ability of the stomach to churn, digest, and ultimately move the food into your intestines to be absorbed by your body. This is the reason many athletes use concentrated gels, they are easier to digest while exercising. She's definitely not getting any additional energy from the snacks she's eating.

I don't think you should eat while exercising. You should eat when you are relaxed and can enjoy it more, I believe.
