How long do you have to walk before you start burning fat?!


Question: I've read 15 minutes in some books and up to a half hour in some books before you start burning any fat. So which is it if I walk between 2.5 and 3 miles per hour for 45-60 minutes?

Your body is very efficient at determining where it gets it's energy. It will use what is most readily available. Sugar and fat in the blood first, then stored fat. If you do your walk several hours after eating, the stored fat will be burned earlier. What's important is to reduce your calory consumption below your daily requirement. Exercise makes this easier.

your doing well enough, are you sure you need to burn fat? try jogging if your fit enough. I'm overweight and arthritic and have been advised to walk 15 mins a day to burn fat then try a little longer as I get fitter. But as I say I'm overweight.

Jogging or running half and hour compared to walking, you'd burn more calories faster.
