Pulled muscles...why?!

Question: Bascially, I've had about a 4 week break from my martial art, aikido over christmas etc, and when I went back on Tuesday, it was a light session but still hard work. Anyway, my question is, why is it when I pull muscles I don't feel it till a whole day later? Aikido was tuesday night. I woke up wednesday morning with sore shoulders and that was it. Then wednesday evening, I had pain (from pulled mucles) in my legs, stomach, chest, back, even my neck! (very lightly but still!) I had a relaxing day, no exercise just went to my two lectures and came home again. Why do they start getting sore so late? Today I feel like I'm dying with all this pain, yet yesterday morning only my shoulders hurt? Any help will be appreciated, thanks!
(p.s. I'm not too bothered about the pain, but it bugs me that it stops me from exercising because of it.)

Well it sounds like you have delayed onset muscle soreness (doms). Your muscles break down as you exercise and depending on your fitness level you will suffer varying degrees of soreness for a day or two afterwards. You haven't pulled any muscles your muscles are sore from the healing process. The best way to get over this is to start off slowly and to work your way through it a little. Maybe on days you feel too sore you can go for a swim which will help stretch your muscles and keep the blood flow to them a little higher which will help them heal. If you keep stopping and starting you will go through the same process everytime. I am feeling the same symptoms right now as slacked off training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu over Christmas and am slowly getting back into a full schedule.

Hope this helps.

I bet you've pulled a few muscles in your time.

You say you "feel like dying".... maybe you are

Not sure if you have a "pulled muscle" as much as what you have described is delayed onset muscle soreness. (DOMS). This is actually very common and varies depending on general conditioning, level of exertion, proper form and technique. A pulled muscle is actually damage to the muscle (hyperextension) which will require several weeks to recover assuming no tears occur.

To prevent this, proper warm up and cool down is important. Proper hydration and nutrition are important to minimize the potential. What you consider a "light workout" may be significant for under-used muscles. Remember to try to stay consistent and increase your effort output over time. Allow for full recovery before re-exertion to minimize the likelihood of damage or chronic energy.

Good luck, be safe

If it's that bed you might wont to take a break. I do know from experience, things like pulled muscles tend to bother one more when it gets closer to dark. I don't know why. My son is in Karate and Jujitsu and he has something hurting all the time. He is not in competition anymore strictly self defense and they make contact, and I'm sure it hurts. A good body massage if the core muscles might help. I do know about getting hurt and not knowing it at the time. I've done it lots of times. I have a scare on my arm where I got burned and I never felt a thing. I hope some one can help, wish I could do more.-Bea
