Will protein shakes help build muscle in a workout not involving weightlifting?!

Question: In my workout I do sets of push ups and sit-ups. I also do a lot of cardio like jump roping. Will drinking a protein drink help me out? Do I drink it before or after my workout? What is the best brand?

what causes muscle to grow? stress. the muscle has to be challenged in some way in order to initiate the mechanisms that cause the muscle to build itself up.

you don't have to lift weights but there does have to be some degree of stress to the muscle. once that occurs, any source of protein will supply the building blocks to generate additional muscle tissue.

i usually try to get in some protein within the first hour after the workout. it's very important to eat a balanced diet. protein alone is not enough. you need carbs for energy and veggies and fruit for fiber and vitamins.

so, yes, protein shakes will help as much as any other protein as long as your excercises are really challenging your muscles.

muscle milk is a beast. you can drink it before and after if you like and before bed.

I would drink it 3 hours before you workout and if your sore when you wake up then drink some more of it.

with out using progressive resistance you aren't going to build a lot of muscle. the body adapts to push-ups rapidly as they are equivalent to only 60% of the total bodyweight. if you want to gain muscle all over your body you are going to have to use weights eventually.
