i have knee problems too - and I'd have to encourage you to go with the elliptical rather than running......it's lower impact on your joints and gives a great calorie burn. If you're really worried about calories, try doing interval training on the elliptical (in a similar fashion to spinning on a bike) - this will really get your body working hard....works for me. If you really miss running, try to limit it to 2 or 3 times a week.
I'm not sure about the calorie burn of running compared to interval training on an elliptical, but in the long term at least if you look after your knee you can work out - if you stuff your knee you will need to rest it which will sabotage any workout plans you might have.
Good luck!
Oh - and for the knee, can I recommend trying yoga!?!?! I just started and have noticed a huge difference!

same here,i have lam-o knee cracking nastie problems.
i ran track for the last two years, andthis year too, and my metabolism is like WOOSH super fast.
and the pounds are like SHHHHH off.

Any exercise will boost your metabolism, but if you're having knee problems, stay off both those and get a bicycle for the cardio. To bump your metabolism the most, go with weight lifting, but if you want to be able to run go light weight with a higher number of reps/sets. And to help your knees out, look into glucosamine/chondroitin supplements- worked wonders for me!

If you have knee problems and running bothers that, then it doesn't matter which burns more calories - go with the one that doesn't injure you. Any workout is better than doing nothing.

With that said, running and an elliptical workout burn about the same number of calories per hour. You can increase the workout on the elliptical by turning up the resistance and using some hand weights once you get to the point that you can balance without support.

Actually if you walked a mile you would burn just as many calories as if you ran..so if I had knee problems I would stick with walking
