Will I get bulky or toned?!

Question: I've been using the eliptical machine at the gym for an hour everynight (it destresses and helps me sleep) but I've been gaining weight instead of losing.
I thought if I did a lot of cardio, it would shed pounds and make my legs toned. I've been noticing that the extra weight I've gained seems to be muscle on my legs. I've been using the lowest resistence level.
Is there a way to just tone my legs without adding bulk?

I think it's just temporary swelling (water retention) in the muscles from doing so much cardio. To actually gain muscle mass, it takes a lot of high resistance exercises coupled with a high amount of protein. Cardio on a low resistance would not gain muscle mass, but like I said it's probably temporary swelling of the muscles. Take a few days off and your thighs will go back to normal size, but will still be toned.

That's probably happens because you don't eat right
Try to cut off a little with the carbs and eat more vegetables.
Remember to drink 8 glasses of water and sleep well (Sleep has major factor on our weight)
Hope I've helped ya

The reason your gaining weight is the muscle tone. Muscle weighs more than fat. If you want to tone your legs try running. It will slender them out. You can also do weight for your legs. Try high reps and low weights. You will get tone without the bulk.

The weight gain is muscle, which is a good thing.
It is extremely hard to become bulky, as in it takes years of training and hard work to look like the "scary muscle men".
If you are trying to loose weight, you need to adjust your eating habits as well as exercise. Also, try other leg exercises, such as weight machines and such. Running on the eliptical machines usually targets your calves, but where most of the fat lies is your thighs.

Don't worry about gaining weight if it's muscle! Muscle obviously weighs more than fat, but it also takes up less room. You should measure yourself and track your progress by that.

First I think all of the answers given have something to offer. Here is my opinion without knowing you. It sounds to me like you may have a little temporary growth. As you continue to workout it will go away. I do mostly cardio myself - every now and then I will do some lifting when I do I seem to enlarge almost instantly. The problem with me is that I need to incorporate working my upper body as much as my lower body. I believe that the growth you experience is only temporary and that you should increase the resistance on the elliptical just a little decrease the time and incorporate some upper body in your workout every other time you go to the gym. Mix it up a little.

by exercising regularly you have increased insulin sensitivity in your muscles. when this occurs nutrient uptake in the muscle cell increases. your body is storing more excess blood sugar (glucose) in the muscle cell as glycogen. the body also stores water with each molecule of glycogen at about a 1:3-1:4 ratio. so for each molecule of glycogen comes 3-4 molecules of water. this is perfectly normal and is how the muscle cell is designed to operate. typically 3% of the total bodyweight is from stored glycogen/water. this is why your muscles seem "bigger" and look fuller. you aren't gaining muscle, it takes quite a bit of effort with progressive resistance and a high calorie diet to gain muscle.
