Does chewing gum between meals help you lose weight?!

Question: funny, i was wondering the exact same thing.
if so, i'm going to go buy a freaking store full of gum....i think it's helping me not eat right now because i just put a piece in my mouth and i feel bad if i spit it out to go eat ice cream.
however, the chewing motion creates the stuff in your stomach to digest food, which makes your stomach rumble when you're really not hungry.
double-edged sword much?
sorry if this didn't help!!!

Wrigley is doing its level best to convince us that Gum is Good.

Can you really lose weight just from chewing gum?

Wrigley link to a rather verbose research article [PDF] looking into the effect of gum-chewing.

It seems that the bottom line is that when people chewed gum for 15 minutes, they ate slightly less sweet foods (36 Calories) than when they didn't chew the gum.

There are a few shortcomings of such research:

The numbers were small - just 40 women and 20 men - of which only 9 were overweight or obese.
The results were also skewed by those called "restrained eaters". Those who were good at denying themselves food tended to be the ones who ate less after chewing the gum.
This is no double-blind research. Either you were chewing the gum or you weren't. Who is to say how the gum-chewers consciously or subconsciously changed their eating habits?
The research was "supported" by an Educational Award from the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company.
Then there is, of course, the aspartame - a controversial subject. However despite the collection of research claiming there's nothing wrong with aspartame - the massive body of anecdotal evidence gives many of us pause.

Recently a woman made headlines (supported by her doctor) claiming that the aspartame in chewing gum lead to a myriad of health problems. Of course the 4 packet-a-day habit didn't help.

I chew gum - but I'm not going to kid myself that I will lose pounds because of it. Does gum curb your cravings?

Probably not? .. it'll probably give ya more cavities.

Moving your jaw up and down burns calories. So yes, but not a lot.

no it doesn't... u can only loose wieght if u eat right, small portions, and exercize! try that. don't starve ur self

If it keeps you from eating, YES!! It's all about calories!! Don't forget to drink lots of water! :)

it just helps curb cravings because it gives your mouth something to do, so you stop thinking about food

it does burn calories but not so much weight i think people think it makes you loose a ton of wieght because by chewing gum it tricks your stomach to think your eating so your not hungry and tempted to pig out too much so it's kinda a cool trick to stop hunger

no,

lmao @ ways to lose weight that people come up with. I somehow doubt if i give all the gum in the world to all fat obese people, and have them chew it between meals that it would help them. You did however manage to make me laugh so you get a star!

Only because you can't eat and chew gum at the same time!

Chewing burns calories but remember that your also adding sugar calories from the gum. It's enough calories to be noticeable though.

whenever i chew gum it makes my stomache rumble like mad.i think it's cos my mind is telling my stomache i'm eating, but nothing actually getting digested, and i just think it makes you hungrier.if that makes any sense at all!

no, why on earth should it, you are grasping at straws! To lose weight you need to eat less and take more exercise.
