I am trying to loose weight?!

Question: I have been going to the gym about 3-4 days a week, for a little over an hour each. When I go, I spend about 20 minutes on the bike (cardio) and 30- 35 minutes on the machines working various muscles, and end with about 10-15 minutes on the eliptical machine. I have been watching what I eat, but not real closely. When looking into eating habbits, I noticed that cheese has a lot of calories in it, does this mean I should really limit that intake? What kinds of meals would you suggest besides salads for healthy choices? I'm also thinking of joining weight watchers, what advice do they usually give? Any help would be great. I'm 21, 5'8 and really have no idea what I weigh at this point, but my highest was 200 : (, please no negative comments on my weight, I just want some help with eating habbits.

Healthy foods:

Salads, but other things you can use vegetables in like soups. You can also experiment with veg stews or add a little lean meat.

You're right to cut down on cheese. Cut down also on full-fat milk, yoghurt, cream, cream cheese, quark - all the dairies. They are only for children anyway. As regards calcium, remember that cows eat green vegetation, and take lots of leafy vegetables.

Oh, and about those salad dressings - have you got those readymade ones in your cupboard? Throw them away, they are rubbish. Use extra virgin olive oil and nice vinegar, and add fresh herbs of your choice. You can also try oils like sesame, mustard (which is also great on boiled potatoes instead of butter), peanut - whatever you fancy. You only need a tablespoon of it over your salad anyway.

Weightwatchers are a good guide, and I lost quite a bit of weight with them, their booklets with the points guidance are really helpful. I stopped going because I felt that those bloody women running it where I live were far keener to sell the Weightwatchers products that give constructive advice and guidance to those trying to lose weight, but I kept the book because it is such a good guide.

You'll get no negative comments from me, my dear - in fact, I'm big into healthy eating and am very glad to see that so many people are taking steps to long-term weight loss in a safe and healthy manner. Oh, I'd also suggest looking at Carol Vorderman's Detox books for recipe ideas - these are really great healthy low-calorie meals and I've got some super ideas from them.

Anything's healthy if you hold off on the nasty artificial foods like margarine and the dangerously high saturated fats like butter.

Best of luck!

You're on the right track cole. Exercise is awesome. Drink plenty of liquids, water preferably. Try to eat as natural as possible. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats or nuts and legumes for protein. Stay away from fast foods and processed foods (foods that come in a can or box or package)
Avoid sugars at all costs. They are deadly. Cheese and most red meats are very fattening. Don't waste your money on diets. Lock yourself into a lifestyle that won't let you gain weight. Keep up the exercise! Good Luck. For good advice go to mercola.com
