The Atkins Diet, what do you think of it?!

Question: It would be good to hear from nutritionalists if there are any about! My dad does it and says the weight just drops off! I thought no carbs at all weren't good for you? Also it made his cholesterol really high! Has anyone tried it? What were your results like? Thanks in advance.

It works for weight loss, but you've already put your finger on the problem: high cholesterol. Seems insane to choose a slimmer figure at this cost. Try another diet....and exercise.

Stinky!

its tasty , easy to stick to and cheap

Unhealthy, unwise.

doesn't work, you end up eating fatty fried meat and nothing else!

I think if its made his Cholesterol really high then its speaks for itself.Dont do it because of the long term effects

Dangerous, it is wrong to exclude any food groups healthwise. You cannot sustain it and your body will suffer - high cholesterol, bad breath, fatigue, cravings. Carbs are needed for energy. The weight will drop off as you are excluding much needed carbs, but if you starve the weight will also drop off! Think about it. Just cut your portions and eat fresh healthy food. I did and it works great, I feel great and look great! Also it is easy to sustain as I am getting all the major food groups and have never had so much energy!
Any diet is just that, a diet, not a sustainable for life thing. Even the Atkins reintroduces carbs as you cant exclude them for ever. Good luck

it does work and may be good for rapid short term weight loss.

I used to be a vegatarian, but was always gaining weight. So I started eating it again, and substituted vegetables for starches. And I've been steadly losing weight for a while now.

I guess you have to find your right mix.

You feel terrible for a few days your stools are almost solid (hurts) oh! & your breath smells I did lose weight but I gave it up, it was toooooo painfull to go to the toilet

Everyone I have ever known to be on it did lose weight, but when they got off of the diet, the balooned to more than the original weight. One cannot stay on that diet for ever.

I had a gastric bypass and this is the diet selected by my sergen to use for the rest of my life. If you read the book you will see that you need to use suppliments for this diet...
The diet does shed pounds and as hard as a person trys it is nearly impossible to avoid all carbohydrates/ We use cream milk yogurt cheese these all contain carbs. If your colesterol is rising you may be eating too large of servings.
When you eliminate carbs the hunger ceases.
Oh the thing about bad breath is true so good luck to anyone that trys. I lost 150 pounds and that left me at 150 pounds... I'm happy.

It is dangerous and will lead to long-term health problems if you follow it for any length of time.

A balanced diet and calorie counting with increased exercise are the best ways to lose weight.

No idea at all, I am one of those very lucky who seem to keep the same weight for years and years...I never get to any more than 12st 8 and never less than 12st...
And Im lucky coz I can eat anything at all and gain nothing...

Ok, I have dropped far more pounds and put on a LOT of muscle since may (from 240 to 175) wile still eating carbs. Granted, I also find lifting to be super fun, and I love to exercise...From what I have seen, the reason atkins worked it because, to many americans, thier main sources of carbohydrates are white breads, starches, white cran in general. Foods like that, when eaten, the body registers as sugar, and sugar that isn't burned off shortly after consuming is stored as fat. So, instead of saying "stick to whole grain carbs, like granola and multigrain bread", the diet said "NO CARBS"...which is probably easier to follow, not to mention that a lot of people don't like whole anyhting breads. Before people knew it, the punds were just falling off from cutting a major source something that would eventually store as fat. In the meantime people were eating greasy, fat loaded fried meats, bacon, and lots of cheese...which are all high in fat. The diet was not healthy. If people were to just eat right, like lean, high proten meats like chicken, turkey, egg whites, etc., and not gone overboard with the carbs, but simply eaten more complex carbs, they would have still had the body's main qick energy source, and been dropping weight by cutting out mass amounts of fat. My parents lost weight when the diet was origionally popular, but when i started eating healthy i dropped a lot of weight, have kept it off (and am constantly getting more chisiled) by simply eating right. Point is, you can't cut out carbs all together, they are the body's quick energy source, but for the average, white bread consuming sedentary american, to take carbs out of the picture would drop some punds...but not very healthy

yeah sorry
i do not have a good idea a bout it ..

Doctor Atkins was overweight himself when he died after a fall.
