How long should a yoga mat be? I am 6 ft. 1 in tall. Should i get a 72 in. or an!

Question: Regarding mat length, I can't think of any downside to extra length (extra carrying weight?), but a guideline for the minimum length would be long enough to transition from Upward dog to Downward dog without your heels hanging off the end.

Try this: Start in Upward dog.

Hands should be as far into the left and right corners of one end of mat without fingers hanging off onto floor.
Fingers/thumbs spread wide as possible, tops of feet flat on floor, toes pointed backward.

Then without changing hand position, imaging tips of toes are hinged to floor, and push back into Downward dog.

Your feet 'hinge' over your toes so that feet are now sole-down on the floor.
( if your hamstrings/calves are not too tight)

By maintaining this spacing between hands and feet, if heels are off back end of mat, it's a bit short.

I'm about 6'3" and I'm satisfied with a 72" mat.

Go for this 80 inch mat. There is not size restrictions or rules. I mean if you want to hang off 1 inch you can go with the 72 inch, but there is not much of a price difference. Think , there are people 5 ft 2 in and using mats much bigger than them.
