Can someone tell me why the unhealthy food is so cheap ?!

Question: and just so easily accesible ? Someone has to actually hunt for the healthier foods and break the piggy bank in the supermarket ??

Never mind the fast food resturaunts, because there is hardly any also there either ?

That bothers me so much, too! Well, honestly, I don't really think producers care if we are fat and unhealthy or not. This unhealthy junk that they have been selling to us for quite some time is what has gotten America fat. America has become ADDICTED to these awful foods! So, we will buy lots of the unhealthy stuff, especially if it's cheap:-) And, healthier foods cost more to make because of the different and more natural ingredients that are used instead of the high fructose corn syrup and trans fat. So, when we compare the unhealthy brand to the healthy brand of the same food, we want the unhealthy brand because the healthy kind is too darn expensive! The people who produce these products just want our money... bottom line!

Personally, I think it is a conspiracy. Everyone is so fat these days because it is cheaper to feed your family the cheap stuff than to buy the healthy stuff. I mean oranges are like a dollar piece these days.

cause theres a law thats passed down in congress to make food cheap unfortunately its the junk food.

They are cheaper to make, and they sell more so it is easier to make more, and then be able to turn around and sell cheaper. Also with America on the diet trend people want the healthy food, and to make money they raise the price.

i think processed foods are cheaper cuz they made in factories with really cheap ingredients..frtehshealthier stuff costs more money for shipping and packaging and such..im not positive but i think it has alot to do with it

supply and demand. people dont eat as much healthy food because our youth are told that "brussels sprouts and leafy green vegetables are bad" through television, and this immaturity tends to carry on through adulthood im noticing.. (ask a child if theyve ever tried them. usually they havent.) because of this, less people buy healthy food, and if they had the same prices as unhealthy foods, then they couldnt keep up with them. if you make prices higher, the extra profit sort of compensates for not selling as much. if more people ate healthier, then "Kashi" would make more money than "Kellogs" and could reduce their prices.

its similar to what happened in alaska, around the early 1990s. there were small businesses that sold toys in the mall, and then toys r us came, and then more people would buy from toys r us instead of that shop in the mall, taking their customers and pushing them out of business.
i apologise for the lenghth, and if it seems confusing, i dont exactly have an A+ in my english class.

1. it's easier to produce
2. It lasts longer
3. There is less chance that nature will destroy the crops
4. There is a large market out there for it, so there is no risk in bulk supplying the food.

It is cheaper because they want everyone that cant afford the better food to eat it and die that is why with all of the poisons used today go untouched by the FDA they want you sick they want you to die they want to push drugs on you to see what it will do to you if you don't believe me ask someone that is wealthy what there doctor provides them with wen they get sick and i grant you it will be a drug you will never have a doctor give to someone on a low income

Its all about Dollars & Cents. Think, if you went to the 'super market and picked up two items ( one healthy and the other not) for the exact same price. Which item do you think most people would decide on purchasing?
Also, higher quality cost .. this is a fact in all aspects of life. Better medical care cost more than care of lesser quality. Cars of better quality will cost more than those built of a lesser quality.
So food made with cheaper ingredients ( lesser quality) which may not be healthy for you, but will sell for a lesser amount.
They have to in order to sell, if they sell for equal amounts as the healthy food they will not sell. Since they cost less to manufacture they can be sold for less, and through advertising & marketing they get it out there. In everyone's face, every store, every corner, and every vending machine. They make sure you can obtain it at every corner you turn. Better quality food requires one to hunt through the crappy stuff in order to get to the " Pot Of Gold."

i know that bothers me to. when people even talk about healthy meals it like foreign to them what that is. their is fast food drive thrus but no low calories healthy food drive thrus

The problem is not that healthy foods are so much more expensive, it is that healthy foods require a knowledge of how to boil water at the very least. This is a problem that food banks contend with; people can't deal with staple foods. If they can't rip the top off and stuff it in their mouths, they either don't know what to do with it or can't be bothered. Rice puzzles them, and sometimes potatoes. Forget flour. Even pasta is a mystery to some people. Most college students can master Ramen noodles, so go figure.

The lower grades of tuna are not expensive and are often on sale. Canned mackerel and the lower grades of salmon, ditto. There are affordable meats--notably chicken and pork. Add some vegetables. More and more are available canned with no salt added. Buy the store brand. Frozen are healthy, and they aren't all that expensive. But they DO require the intelligence and initiative to put them in a bowl or pot, twist the knob on a stove or punch the keys on a microwave, and wash the dishes afterwards.

You don't have to hunt for healthy foods or break the piggy bank in a supermarket unless you are an incredibly stupid person, and there are plenty of them to go around which is why we have a fattening population. Why is fattening food so cheap and available? Well, duh. There are are about a million ways to combine starch, fat, sugar and salt with a few flavorings and put it in a bag. They aren't all that cheap either, BUT...

Look out for the bogus "research" which declares that PER CALORIE these foods are cheaper. Of course they are. When you buy healthy foods you're getting a lot more than calories, getting just as satisfied, and not getting nearly as fat. Yes, there's a big difference between a one pound bag of frozen veggies and a one pound bag of potato chips. The chips will cost three times as much and have many more calories. So many more calories that the calories are actually cheaper than those in the veggies. The reason this research is bogus is that price per calorie is a bogus measure of worth unless you're a starving refugee.

But most of those reading this are not starving refugees and do not have to scrabble for calories, so it makes no sense to pay top dollar for foods that combine the four cheapest ingredients into the most fattening combinations the world has ever known. You don't have to take my word for it--go to the supermarket with my suggestions and buy food enough for a good meal with leftovers for tomorrow, much healthier and even cheaper than a number-whatever-meal at McAdolph's, and it doesn't even have to be vegetarian. If you can't do that, you're just too f
