Is walking 4 miles with dumbbells each weighing 10lbs a good idea?!

Question: I see a lot of people walking holding dumbells when walking. Today i did the same holding a 10lb dumbbell each hand( that means i carried 20lbs)

What are the benefits?

What i noticed is that even though i was walking not running my heart was beating fast as if i was jogging. I was seating of which is new. I was not only holding them ..i was kinda lifting my arms and swinging back and forth.

Am i going to lose more weight?
What's your opinion people??

Wow... you most be strong, because I've done that a couple of times for like a mile and my arms get soooooooooo tired!!

I think that walking 4 miles with or w/o the dumbbells is great. 4 miles is a good distance. I think that you will lose weight pretty fast actually if you keep on doing that... as long as you do it at least a few times a week. Your arms will also get really muscular :)

You'll increase your heart rate, which is good. If you bring your arms to a 90 degree angle you'll also be working your biceps. And, I'd have to think that after 4 hours of that your arms would be dead... ;-)

I'd personally go with a lighter weight, 10 pounds seems like a lot for your forearms to handle for 4 miles. Anywhere from 2-5 pounds seems more like it, especially if the pace of the walk is brisk.

Good luck!

i would say that 3lb weights would help you tone up 10lbs may be too much and build muscles up too much

I was reading a book by Dr. Oz, the guy on Oprah, and he says its not a good idea to hold dumbbells because it is bad for your shoulders, and as you age may cause you to need orthopedic surgery for all the stress.

5 lbs in each is enough

try not to swing them

keeping them under control will work the muscles better.

go for it.... but do not neglect the triceps
