How can you train yourself to run?!

Question: I have been using the eliptical for the last month, which says I burn more calories than running. But when I run I sweat more which to me says I am working harder. I watch other people run for an hour, and I literally can't make it 5 minutes! I can do over an hour on the elliptical, but I feel running will be a more efficient work out. Any tips?

First off, it is BS that the elliptical burns more calories than running. Running is the most efficient way to burn calories (slightly more efficient than swimming).

Being able to run for an hour takes time. Most of those people you see running for hours, they probably could only go 5 minutes when they started.

My personal suggestion is to just take it slow for the first couple months. For the first month or so, shoot for 2 miles at a time 4 x a week, slow and steady. If you need to walk, that is fine, just try not too. As you do this more often you will be able to run faster for longer. You just need to be patient at first.

Check out www.runnersworld.com. there is a lot of information for runners of all levels. There are chat rooms to discuss this kind of stuff with people in the same situation. They also have a free, really cool online training log. I find it is a big help to visiti the site, read the boards and keep track of my miles.

Good luck! Running is totally worth the initial pain. Once you reach a level of fitness, you will find it hard to imagine NOT running!

start with a power walk, then when you feel its to easy go to jog and go up from there....it will take a while (months)

i started last year at fast walk, now i can do like 5 miles in a run....

keep at it!!!

remember and progress is postive, it's always better than being on your ***

good luck and stay active

I would start with small fluid steps then move on to larger strides. before you know it you will be running!

Start slowly, Running can be painful! Start doing invterval training, do liek 2 minutes of walking, 2 minutes of running, 2 minutes of fast walking, 2 minutes of running, until you run however you want,. Start slow, work your way up to it.

just try running five mins on the treadmill then walk 20 then run 5 then walk 20 on and on until you build up endurance and can run 10 mins then 20 and so on so on...set yourself a slow pace that you can keep up...dont worry about looking pathetic only runing a little bit because soon youll be running for an hour and people will be like WOW!!!! shes good!!

start in a slow jog the first few times

Wish I knew this one myself, thanks for asking for me.

THE ONLY WAY YOUR GONNA GET BETTER AT RUNNING IS BY RUNNING MORE AND MORE AND MORE
ITS JUST LIKE PRACTICING A NEW SPORT
YOU HAVE TO TRAIN FOR IT

start slow.. run a mile a day.. and walk if you have too. (: start adding just a couple minutes more daily.. it'll add up.
