How can i get my 8 year old not to eat so much- she is getting overweight?!

Question: Hi. Good question. Don't focus on teaching your child to lose weight. If you focus on teaching her just to lose weight, your child may develop problems or feel self conscience. The best way, in my opinion, to teach her not to eat too much is to teach her to eat when she is hungry not just when she feels like it, to eat healthy choices, to think about what she is eating, to eat slowly, and to exercise. Being overweight isn't just about the food a child eats, it is about the overall outlook of life and his or her activities. Does she play any sports or anything for healthy living? If not, encourage her to take part in a sport or a physical hobby. For example, cycling with her friends or playing soccer.

Children learn by example, so watch what you do. If you (I'm not saying you do) tend to eat snacks while watching tv, or grab second helpings when you might not need the food, she will see you. If she takes a lunch for school, monitor what she is takes and what she brings home. Praise her for eating healthy choices and for thinking about what she is eats. You can also show her examples of health portion sizes and the value of eating "right". Don't make this just about your daughter, make this about your family life. Health living can be a special key to a good life, so it's good you wish to open it up and take responsibly.

you should start doing healthy things WITH HER so she wont feel as weird because i lost some weight but i couldnt do it if i was the only one in my family trying to loose it
but once my sisters tried with me i didnt feel so alone in trying to reach my goal

hmm this is a tough one

ive always eaten kinda alot

but recently i got slim( healthy) im 15

when i was 8 i wasnt fat but my mom always tried to get me to eat less

just try byeing healthier food

because nothing hurts more than hearing ur mom implying u eat a little to much even if they are calling you fat

just be nice :)
me and my mom dont get along anymore really
thats the main reason

Maybe its not the amount she is eating, but what she is eating. Obviously if she keeps overeating, she isn't getting full with the right foods. Also try to get her to drink more water or low-sugar juices. She may be eating when she is in fact hungry.

Don't try to get her to stop eating so much, but try getting her to eat healthy. I don't know how much she is eating, but don't tell her she is getting overweight and don't force her to stop eating, that makes food seem like some sort of privilege and it tends to make children want to eat more. My parents would often forbid me from eating too much as a child, not necessarily a bad thing, but that really only makes a child want the food more. Also, if you eat natural foods that don't have lots of sugar and preservatives and "fake" ingredients you will greatly reduce the whole overweight thing. Try to emphasize doing other activities. Most 8 year olds probably don't really care so much about eating as they do about doing something fun. Try getting her to play outdoors or do other physical activities. The worst thing you can do is to either emphasize the negative side of eating or enable her to eat unhealthily. If she is only eating bad foods, then even if she is eating a normal amount she will probably be more overweight than someone eating healthy foods.

She's a growing girl! Children are supposed to eat. You can influence her to eat healthier by buying such foods and doing it too. But, def. do not deprive her of food. Parents can actually be a big influence on how a child eats.

You could also sign her up for some sort of activity such as dance, gymnastics, baseball, etc. Whatever she may be interested in doing. Ask her what kind of sports she would like to try and if she chooses one then sign her up.
