Usually water pills are prescribed to reduce swelling and rid the body of excess water ie. Congestive Heart Failure Since they remove water from the body, they can show weight loss on a scale, but since it is only water weight it can come back or the person may experience dehydration.

HEHE!

Water pills are used to get rid of excess fluid in the body. Someone with congestive heart failure has a heart that does not pump the blood through the vessels as needed leaving behind excess fluids that accumulate. The accumulated fluid can be in the lungs, the hands, feet, etc. The water pill is a diuretic that makes the fluid into urine and gets passed off by urinating. Nobody should take it unless prescribed by a physician because when the excess fluid is removed so are electrolytes like potassium, sodium etc. The body needs a certain amount of these to function. A Dr. will monitor their patients blood lab values when they are on water pills to make sure the electrolytes are in balance. Potassium affects the muscles, the heart is a muscle. Decreased/increased amounts can cause cardiac problems so must be watched. Be careful if you plan on taking water pills.

TKS's answer is exactly right. I suffer from Congestive Heart Failure, and I take "water pills" (diuretics) twice a day.

It's important, though, to take potassium along with them.

They are usually first choice for treatment of high blood pressure.
