Burn more calories then you consume?? WHAT??!

Question: Can somebody please explain this statement to me: "Burn more calories then you consume." I ran for an hour today and burned about 600 calories. I take in about 1400 a day. According to that statement, I would have to run for like, 2 1/2 hours to lose weight! I'm sorry but that cannot be right! Can somebody please explain this?

Also, if it helps to know some details about me,
I'm 5"5"
20 years old
119 pounds

This doesn't mean exercising off ALL of your consumed calories. You have to take into account that housework, walking, and other daily activities burn calories. That includes just sitting on the couch! If you consume 1400 calories a day, than burning 600 calories is way too much. You are either going to burn yourself out, or cause long term damage to your internal organs. Either boost your protein and complex carb consumption and aim for 1600 to 1800 calories a day, or drop your exercise routine to burn 200 to 350 calories. (I recommend the first of that statemtent)

And don't forget to drink water!!!!

Your burn calories just living. Usually around 2000 a day for a normal person.

So you've burned 2,600 from living and the exercise, and consumed 1,400 calories.

You've burned an excess of 1,200 calories that day.

its NEVER healthy to burn more calories then you consume! you should be eatting 2000 calories normally when you arnt dieting. Your body needs food to function. Its never ok to burn them all off during excercise. I think you should be eatting more per day, especially since you are running quite a bit.

before u run in the morning dont eat that way u burn fat instead of calories.but from ur discription it doesnt sound like u need to lose weight

Nonono...what they mean is, between your own body burning up calories to keep itself alive (between 50 and 70 calories an hour) and the calories burned from ACTUAL exercise...this should add up to MORE than the amount of calories you're eating. If you're burning up more calories than you're taking in, you'll lose weight. 3,500 calories to the pound.

Dont worry about trying to burn any more than that I only burn 200 calories on my eliptical everyday and jeez thats enough for me lol. 600 calories burned is great and 1400 calories consumed also is a great amount that you should feel really good about, keep it up!! I bet you look great.

you should be eating around 1500 a day to maintian your weight. If you are working out on top of that you will lose weight. One lb is 3,500 cals. If you burn 500 a day and eat 1500 you will lose a lb a week. Eat right and exercise!

dont forget the metabolism...

Breathing, talking, eating, standing (etc) all use muscular contractions, which 'burn' energy.

The 'rule of thumb' for unavoidable daily calorie (energy) use is 25 Calories (Kcal) for each kilo of your bodyweight.

The true figure for an individual varies widely, and the amount you will use up while doing a particular activity is also highly individual, because everybody moves in a different way. Some styles of movement are more energy-efficient than others.

Even thinking uses (according to measurements) about 60 Kcal an hour. Your brain is powered mostly by sugar, so thinking hard will not help to reduce bodyfat.

ur constantly burning calories...even when ur asleep. every movement u make requires energy and calories r a measure of energy. u consume around 1400 calories and burn off about 600 running. the rest of ur daily activities will burn off a lot more (depending on how active u r). im guessing that ur burning more calories than ur consuming...which isnt necessarily good because ur at a healthy weight 4 ur height. u should try eating a little more (try 2 get up 2 around 2000 calories)
