Ever notice how expensive it is to go on a diet?!

Question: Although they often claim too, I have yet to find a diet that uses regular supermarket ingredients rather than exotic, specialty items that are hard to find and/or never on sale at the local supermarket. Plus, healthy food in general costs a lot more than regular food. Here's an example.

Say you're feeding a family of four. A crappy, high fat meal would be:
Hot dogs, $1 a package
Hot dog buns, $1 a bag
Bag of fries, $2
2 liter of soda, $1
Total: $5

Now here's a typical meal that's good for you:
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, $6 (or more)
1 head of cauliflower, $3
1 Loaf of whole grain bread, $3
1 Bottle of 100% juice, $3
Total: $15

Now I'm not saying I eat hot dogs and french fries every day, but come on! That's 3 times as much, and I could probably come up with a dozen crappy meals for under $8, but almost zero healthy ones.

So ends my rant, but does anyone know a diet or low-fat cookbook (or website) that has reasonably priced meals with normal ingredients?

go to: sparkpeople.com its free. You can type in what you like to eat. type in the recipe and it will tell you how many calories it is. It will figure everything out for you. How may calories you need to eat, how much exercise It is totally free.

It's cheaper to eat rubbish food which just doesn't seem right. No wonder there is so much obesity.

I can live on about $100 a month and I eat very healthy

i eat 6-7 big healthy meals a day. the secret is to buy in bulk.

You can get healthy things cheap too. Try cabbage. it's 39 cents.

That is b/c most of the cheap stuff is artificial.

Boiled veggies or raw veggies without any dips = cheap!
Boiled lean chicken (without skin) = cheap

Just don't eat, that will save ya some cash.

yes, but its cheaper in the long term than having to pay thousands of dollar for open heart surgery or gastric bypass. instant gratification is misleading. preventive measures are always the best way to go. the easy way out always becomes harder in the long run.

you could get four meals out of those chicken breasts and cauliflower, not to mention breakfasts and lunches you can get out of the whole grain bread and orange juice. You are looking at immediate gratification, not at the long haul picture. For five bucks you have lousy food that is going to be gone in two days max, for fifteen, you have enough for a week. Now who is spending money foolishly?

Try eating less processed food and more stuff you have to cook yourself. If you buy the skin-on chicken the dog can help you out by eating the skin. Fruits and vegetables can be had at huge discounts at ethnic markets. Juice is high in sugar. drink water instead and put a filter under your sink - cheaper than paying for water to be shipped to the store for you. And how about growing some of our own veggies? Doesn't take much space and can be a lot of fun.

What you are saying it not true. Foods that are not good for you may be cheap but you have to eat a lot of it to get full. Juice is not good for you, that can go to the bad food list along with the meat. Fruits, veggies, and whole grain bread may be expensive but much less is consumed. It's more expensive because they don't hold a long shelf life. Fast foods and other foods that are unhealthy are high in calories and fat and are full of preservatives that are very unhealthy. They can last long but are very bad for our bodys.
I eat healthy because I am worth it. I'm not gonna buy "cheap" unhealthy foods just to save money. I don't want to get cancer, diabetes, or other diseases that are caused by those "cheap" foods and I don't want to get obese because it's not worth it. In the end you are gonna spend a lot of money on hospital bills and insulin or other medication because you wanted to save money buying "cheap" unhealthy foods. I am saving money by eating healthy because I don't have to buy any medications or go to the doctors because I get sick.
