Abs Definition: HOW?!

Question: I'm 20 yr old female. I have a flat stomach (and am generally not overweight. 5'4, 125lbs), but no matter how many crunches or lower abs exercises i do, there's hardly any definition to it. Do i have to lose more weight? Any tips?

Also, I've heard you have to have a really strict diet in order to get abs. Is this true? And how long does it take to get ab definition?

I'm sorry to tell you this but genetically it just might not be possible! But don't worry there's many people like this including me. I'm almost 5'4 (okay FINE I'm 5'3.5 :P) and I had lost a ton of weight(thyroid problem) bringing me done to a mere 100 pounds and STILL I had that lower "pouch". Now after gaining weight and being back in healthy range my stomach looks..the same! Strange isn't it?
Anyways if it is genetically possible for you to have ab definition reduce your intake of sugary and salty foods as this only bloats your stomach up. As you probably already know you must drink a ton of water maybe not 8 cups but at least one with every meal! As for exercise you must do cardio along with strenght or endurance training to get full definition. I feel these are very effective :

Leg scissors:
Lay on the ground with your back. Now put your legs straight out and lift both of them about 6 inch's from the ground. Slowly raise one 90 degrees and lower it back to 6 inch's above the ground and while your doing that bring the other leg up. Repeat and do that for about 25 times. So about 3 sets of 25.

Reverse Crunch:

If you want some more check our youtube because they have tons just type in "ab" or "lower ab" exercises. Oh and as for cardio do 20-30 mins on the treadmill or elliptical. I hope this helps!

If you are talking about s basically hollow are below your rib cage...That's probably not something to work on. Having a flat stomach so that when you tuck a tee shirt into your Levi's there's nothing hanging over the waistband....THAT"S totally as good as it ever needs to be. I personally think the sunken in look just looks skinny and kind of sick. Just my opinion...Right now, because of my winter hibernation and needing to stock up on a little fat..(lol) My flat stomach is hag'n over a bit...but 5 pounds in the spring and it's gone. Be glad that you are healthy have really cute figure...How do I know that..i just do! ? enjoy!

one word: running

Abs are like any other muscle in the body, they have to be torn and built up.

If you curled a pencil 1,000 times a day would you have massive arms? Of course not!

So you need to do an exercise that will provide some resistance to build your abs, just like adding weight to a curl bar will build up your biceps. Exercises like the Weighted crunch and Hanging leg raises (see sources) will provide resistance while working your abs and you'll have rock hard abs in no time.
