Can I diet below 1000 calories without my metabolism slowing?!

Question: I'm NOT thin. I used to be, until 6-8th grade. Now I'm in 9th grade and I realize that I really should be losing weight, although I've known this since 7th. I've been trying and nothing has been working.

Suddenly, though, it's like I've figured out how to diet.
I'm 14, I run about 2-3 miles per day for XC and Track&Field.
I also do 30 minutes of ab, arm, leg, and butt toning per night.
I burn about 200 calories off from each.
I eat about five meals per day, so it doesn't slow it down.

I weigh about 137 lbs, and I have a gross stomach & love handles.
I want to diet until I lose them and firm my butt and legs.
Then I want to slowly increase my caloric amount back to 2250 (recommended)

Breakfast: 270 calories.
Snack: 100 calories.
Lunch: 300 calories.
XC/TRACK: -200.
Dinner: 300 calories.
Desert: [protein bar] 200 calories.
TONING: -200.

Given your activity level, I wouldn't recommend dropping much below 2000 calories a day. If you want to lose some weight, try improving the quality of the food rather than cutting way back on the calorie count. Avoid empty calories, such as soft drinks, refined grains, and anything deep fried. Opt for lean meats, lots of whole grains (energy for your workouts), nuts, fruits, and vegetables.

Drop below 1000 calories a day and you're risking your health on a lot of levels. You'll burn muscle instead of fat, your metabolism will slow, and you'll risk passing out during track practice... then your running days may be over for a while.

EDIT: I'm not counting your exercise as "negative calories" like you did in your meal outline. Just keep your total intake around 2000 calories and keep on working out, the weight will come off.

Probably not.

hate to break it to you sweetheart, but no. you need at least 1200 calories a day to be healthy, even when you're losing weight. if you won't take this random stranger's word for it, then go to the tabloids- all the "celebrities" are going for a minimum of 1200 calories.

you are kidding, try more streng exercise, hit the machines with all you have.

at your age, you are still growing, you will stunt your growth if you eat less than 1400 calories a day. Stick to 1400, and as you grow the weight will redistribute, this is a long term thing honey, you aren't going to be able to change yourself overnight, and for the sake of your health you should not try.
