Keep this in mind: Football is a heavy contact sport that includes fast bursts of running/shoving/hitting and small breaks in between, somewhat similar to boxing. Therefore, stick with SLIGHTLY heavy weights, or even lighter, and get those reps up. You'll need the endurance. Keep the time between sets to a minimum. If you want to throw in some running, since it always helps, try sprinting for a minute, walking for 15-25 seconds, sprinting for 1 minutes, walking 15-25 sec, and so on.
