They may be telling you exactly how many calories there are, but they may not tell you the sources of those calories. E.g. calories from fat, protein, or carbohydrates.

The calorie levels are always truthful - the way they deceive you is in the amount of servings.
Take a pot pie for example. I happened to notice once at the store, a chicken pot pie's nutrition information said around 500 calories for a serving, which is already kind of high for one meal. However, there are two servings per box, meaning, two serving in one pie. Make sure you watch out for your serving sizes.
