Looking to purchase an Eliptical Machine.?!

Question: I am doing research on different eliptical machines, and would appreciate any information anyone may have on any brands or dealers (positive or negative) to help in my decision on which one to buy. There are so many different kinds and brands and dealers to choose from. I find it very overwhelming.

Also, if you have had experience with treadmills vs. elipticals (besides the ones at the gyms) that would be great too. I also have a budget, so any price experience with these machines would help me too.

Thanks for the help!

I had a Proform elliptical. I initially enjoyed it but after a while it became very unbalanced and felt like it was rocking on the floor while I was using it. Also, the pedals had a clicking feeling when pedalling. A very annoying sound and feeling when trying to get a good workout in. After using the ones in the gym, I definitely knew it was not a good elliptical. We paid about 400 for our Proform and then sold it.

My parents just bought an elliptical for over 3,000 dollars this fall after I told them how much I loved the ones at the gym. They got theirs from Costco and it was so nice. They bought a LifeFitness elliptical and they thoroughly enjoy it. My dad will be 67 this summer and ran a few marathons (after he turned 60) and enjoys this elliptical more than any other exercise he has ever done. Basically, the more you spend the better the machine.

I researched ellipticals for a while, but ended up getting a treadmill. My reasoning was that I enjoy running outdoors during good weather, and the treadmill is much more like actual running than an elliptical.

I got the Sole F83, and am extremely happy with the quality. It's almost as solid as a club machine, but a lot cheaper. If you did go this direction, there's a guy who sells them on E-bay (my first E-bay purchase) that's cheaper than anyone else. And the service is fast.

Here's a good review site:

I bought an eliptical two years ago. I used it 16 times, and took it back. I now have a treadmill, and I've had it for 2 months. I've used it 30 times. I love my treadmill. The eliptical, thought it did what it was supposed to, I found didn't give me the workout that a treadmill did. I didn't like using it at all. I recommend trying one out consistantly before you buy it. I paid $1400.00 for my Progression Eliptical, and paid $2100.00 for my Nautilus Treadmill.

I had the same dilemma when I wanted to buy one. My husband and I invested quite a bit of time researching them on the internet. I personally found the ones with the movement mechanism in front as opposed to the ones at the back received much better reviews and customer satisfaction. I also found that if you aren't willing to pay at least $1000 for one, you're probably wasting your money because...well, you get what you pay for. We finally decided on the Iron Man EVO1 and financed it through fitnessblowout.com because we are also on a budget. I've had it for almost a year now and I love it! It's actually fun so you'll use it more often. It was fairly easy to assemble and we have had no problems what so ever out of it. I know this is a major investment for you as it was for us so I wish you lots of luck!

They take up a lot of space. I prefer eliptical - I use the ones at the gym, not sure why you didn't want info about the ones used in gyms.

I'd join the gym instead of buying equipment. You get variety, you get the latest equipment, you get access to trainers - even if you don't sign up for a session you can pester them with a few questions. You get to use the weights. You can meet other people trying to get in shape and exchange ideas with them.

It's fun.
